Personally, I see auto start/stop as a plus, esp for in city driving. Always irks me to arrive/stop at an intersection just as the light turned red and have the wait the full 2-5 minutes while the MPG drops.

Start/Stop will beat the starter up more, I see no point to it personally and would avoid it. Also no manual option, too bad.

I think the question is did they just used a beefed up starter on an otherwise regular engine or did they upgrade all the relevant components to account for the extra start/stops. Probably they would have upgraded the battery as well.

On hybrids, they were designed from ground up for auto start/stop and they have low displacement engines.

One regular ICE engines, there is some suspicion manufacturers upgrade just the starters, and the rest of the engine will just get more wear and tear from the extra start/stops.

Who knows what Subaru did for their implementation. It is first Forester with Auto stop/start. Perhaps they will learn as time goes on and improve or perhaps they already did all their homework at the design phase.

Use your best judgment to decide whether it is something you want or want to avoid.

Auto Start Stop maybe new to the US market and the 2019 Forester but other markets have had the Auto Start Stop standard on the previous SJ Forester since January 2013.
The vehicle battery type for the Auto Start Stop is a Q85 here in Australia on the SJ Forester, the following video explains the Auto Start Stop in the impreza

That's a great video, but who really drives that slowly/methodically?

**pull up behind obviously stopped/distracted/unattended vehicle**
*full stop*
*wait...2...3..*
*blinker*
*gtfo the way*

No one, it is an exaggerated Subaru instructional video explaining in a methodical way how the auto start stop works in the older Gen. Impreza.

The US Spec. MY19 Forester User Manual - Page 339 is a good resource re. auto start stop system, it's worth the read:grin2:

I don't think anyone will have a problem with Auto Stop/Start not working at times. Most people seem to be against it anyway. They definitely wouldn't avoid being able to see out, or risk burning to death in a mobile oven just for stop/start.

Just about all manufacturers Auto SS features are impacted by the AC running...that is totally normal. Some cars, when the AC is running on high, will disable the Auto SS feature automatically.

Who is going to not run their a/c or defroster so they can use the auto stop/start.
That is ridiculous! Sounds like I will just be pushing that cut off stop/start button daily!
I think you may be misunderstanding. I believe the manual to mean that under high heat conditions Auto-Start/Stop will be disabled until the engine cools down. :nerd:

Have you guys seen in the 2019 manual that the auto stop/start may not work with the a/c on high or rear window defroster on, etc? WTH?!!?!?!
Yes I've seen it and experienced it over the last 5 plus years of driving a auto start stop Forester, the auto start stop doesn't concern me one little bit, the replacement costs of the eyesight genuine windscreens are more of a concern after 3 windscreens in the last 18 months on a non eyesight Forester. Thank goodness for insurance:grin2:

A hack for new players, when the engine turns off with the auto start stop, a very slight reduction of foot pressure on the brake pedal will restart the engine :grin2:

Start/Stop really isnt a big deal. I guess it is to some of you, because you either have little or not experience with it. When we purchased my wife's '18 VW Atlas last year I thought the feature would be annoying. After a couple days driving with it, I was over it. The feature isnt at all annoying and you will get used to it quickly.

As far as S/S being smart enough to disable itself under certain conditions. As others stated if the vehicle needs to run to supply the requirements to keep the climate controls or other electronics working then it will not turn off when coming to a long stop. It will actually display a message in the drivers information center.. that S/S has been disabled due to engine/resource/climate requirements. When S/S is enabled and turns off it is controlled by your foot on the brake. As soon as you release just the smallest amount of pressure on the brake pedal the engine will restart and remain running. Its a very handy feature and I personally am surprised it took Subaru this long to incorporate a feature that pretty much every other manufacturer has made standard on every vehicle they produce.

It might not seem like alot of savings when it comes to just your vehicle, but when you imagine at any given moment there are literally millions of cars sitting somewhere at a stoplight just idling.. that is an incredible amount of wasted fuel and extra emissions hurting the environment with practically no real world benefit. THAT is the real reason you see every manufacturer on board to support the feature.

Does anyone know if the Subaru stop/start has a vehicle hold feature...

i.e. when you take you foot off the brake, the engine starts but the car does not lurch forward. Experienced this style test driving a Santa Fe...

Exactly what my wifes C300 does. The restart and s so intrusive the car lurches forward.
Hate it. We prefer to drive my 17’ Forester.
