or at least the beefed-up alternator - can help spin the combustion engine, including at start up.
The days when there were generators instead of alternators, on small engines (single cylinder mostly) the generator doubled as the starter.

But this is not the case with the Subaru AS/S.

That was an easy way to test a generator, just jump power to the terminals, and it would motor if all was well.

A bit of rewiring, and I guess an alternator could do the same. Not sure how they get around the alternating current vs the direct current generators produced, as far as making an alternator "motor".

Does the auto stop/start feature actually engage the starter motor for every start or is there an auxiliary starter motor?

There's way too much to learn. I see that AVH is like auto Stop/start without stopping the engine! LEARNING CURVE!
I think it’s a big mistake to buy one of these new SK Foresters due to the federally mandated start stop system. Too much stress on the starter, not to mention direct injection engines. These SK’s will not last and will not be as reliable as SJ Foresters.

The engine will also shut off with AVH when conditions are met.
My AVH doesn’t do that, it just holds the brake while in gear.

Just FYI, the AS is easily defeated if you have Automatic Reverse braking. I am sure doing a search on this site you will find out. costs $85 with coupon and no wire cutting or splicing and is reversible any time by toggle it using the factory switch. Just saw post #10, that works wonder for me too. The newer forester is a big improvement over previous generation, no need to throw the baby out with bath water, IMHO.

@SilverDiamond AS-S isn't (yet) EPA mandated. The Ascent doesn't have it along with an unfortunately dwindling number of other vehicles.

As for the SK vs SJ, guess what goes in that blank space next to the X-Mode badge on an SJ.....in the JDM and ANZ markets (among other countries) it's the AS-S button. For whatever reason we didn't get it here in North America until the SK. Subaru has been doing AS-S for a while and there simply hasn't been a rash of premature starter failures. We have a sizable ANZ contingent on this forum and you know we'd hear about if there was an issue.

I'm no fan of AS-S and I find Subaru's system to be rough starting compared to some others, but least Subaru lets you turn it off each time you start the car. Most GM cars with AS-S don't have any sort of override.

I agree with several of the posters here about disabling the A.S.S. system in the SKs. The auto stop start eliminator is $100 well spent. Not only does it save the engine from 1000's of start-stop cycles, it also will make your battery last longer and I think not using it is safer. If you are stopped and need to hit the gas to get yourself out of a dangerous situation, that delay as the engine restarts could make a big difference. If you are driving in the city a lot, the battery is always going to be in a suboptimal charging state, which will shorten its life over time. I've found that the fuel savings is very small when I was using the A.S.S. system (using the dash fuel saving guage when the car is stopped). The 2019-2021 Subaru Forester Autostop Eliminator device is just plug'n play and doesn't actually change anything. It just remembers where you left the dash button set at the last time the car was running.

If you decide you want to purchase one of those, here is a trick. Add the item to your cart and go through the checkout process. Don't put in your credit card info and don't submit the order. Wait a few hours. You will receive an email from them with a 15% off code you can use to finish the order.

I’m no fan of A/S/S, and I installed the Auto start/stop eliminator on my 19 Touring as soon as it hit the market. It works flawlessly.

Regarding potential starter and DI engine failures, as you stated, that’s an opinion. So far, we haven’t seen an explosion of failed starters, and DI engines have been around for 2 decades now in various makes. There’s not much indication either technology is going away anytime soon, and most likely will be around until the mass move to EVs.

I guess conversely, there also doesn't seem to be a downside to not using the A.S.S. system either. Besides using a very slight amount of extra gas, having fewer start-stop cycles, less drain on the battery, etc. is probably better in the long term. Just a guess but to my mind, it just seems logical to me. The A.S.S. system was basically forced on auto makers to meet CAFE requirements. If those requirements weren't there I really doubt that car manufacturers would have implemented this system to improve some functionality or life of some components in the vehicle.

Actually there are 2 models of the device. Only one requires AVR, since it uses the AVR connector under the driver's seat to connect to the vehicle's CANbus system. The other instead connects to the CANbus at the EyeSight connector, which requires unscrewing the cover, adding a step.

It may depend on model year, or how hard the brake was held when activated. I have found it varies a bit as to whether or not it shuts the engine off or it just idles until the gas pedal is tapped.

It can be a bit unnerving when it restarts the engine while the AVH is on. The car wants to move, but the brake still holds it. If you are not ready for it, it does get your attention...

Overall, I have found that AS/S doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would. Definitely not enough to spend $85 to $100 to disable it. After all, I can always press the dash button if I don't want it to activate. Usually where there is a lot of start/stop driving where it will be restarting the engine every 30 feet or every few minutes.

But for occasional extended stops, I don't mind it. Plus if it cuts down on a bit of air pollution, it can't hurt.

Just installed it and it works perfectly! You have to have AE022 for RAB, the AE026 that connects to the eyesight system does not fit the 2022. If you don’t have RAB you will not be able to install one. Hope this helps.

I have a Limited without RAB, so I emailed the company (TRL Automotive) about this and got the following interesting reply:

to me

Jay,

New products depend on the vehicles customers bring us. We could work with you to make one if you want to bring the vehicle to Fairmont, WV. We'd do it for free and pay you $300 for your time because we could then offer the device for sale to others. We don't need to drive your vehicle and you could stay with your vehicle the entire time. It usually takes about 6-8 hours to put together a prototype and test it. Let me know if you're interested.

Or, some vehicles have come to us because someone posted on forums/Facebook/social media and found someone with the same vehicle closer to us and they brought the vehicle to us. Just throwing that out in case you participate in the forums and can help us and help yourself get the device sooner by getting someone to bring us a vehicle. Otherwise, I'll let you know if/when a device is made available.

It's too far away from me to make the trip feasible, but if anyone is closer and feels like making $300 and a free device you should email them and set it up.
