Are SH and SJ Forester Struts the Same?

14142 Views 18 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  TSR85
Has anyone measured the SH forester and SJ forester front struts to see if they are the same? Particularly I am interested in the height of the spring perch.

This is one of the limiting factors for tire size on the SH foresters and I am curious if the SJ has a slight advantage here. Recent research has indicated that the spring perch may be mounted higher on the SJ strut body.

If anyone has this information and could provide it, I would greatly appreciate it!

@Anderson Design & Fab might know. I believe his SH and SJ strut top spacers are the same design.
I just talked to my local dealer. They confirmed that the part numbers are different between a '13 and a '14. However they could not provide any further detail...

iirc, while back when he was making different susp combos.. @FlashEngineer made some mentions and pic and info on differences he came across, or figured to be true on SH vs SJ struts. scroll through his threads maybe?
From what ive seen the SJ have a slightly higher spring perch than the SH. So i would think that the spring is a tad smaller than the SH spring.

I stopped by the dealer and did a quick comparision between my SH and the SJs on the lot. Both vehicles are running the same size tire (225/60/17). on stock offset wheels (+48). There is noticeably more room between the tire and the lower spring perch on the SJ. to put an approx number to it I would estimate another 1/2" of clearance vs the SH. It also appears that there is less horizontal overlap of the spring perch over the tire on the SJ. Leading me to believe that one could get the tire outside of the spring perch with a more mild offset than is required on an SH.

Also food for thought. The front knuckles are the same part number between the SH and SJ (meaning same strut mounting points). Also the front top hats are the same part # between the SJ and the SH. The springs are different part numbers. This leads me to believe that SJ takeoff would be a drop in replacement to the SH, potentially allow one to fit larger tires with stock offset wheels.
SH oem tire size is 225/55 17. and SJs all have 18" wheels iirc.

edit.
wait, maybe its only XTs with 18"?

SJ XT models have 18 inch wheels with 225/55/18.

SJ 2.5i touring have the same size, just a chrome wheel.

Other 2.5i trims have 17 inch alloy or steel wheels with 225/60/17 tires.

That's correct, the XT's get 18" wheels, NA's have 17" wheels.
Yep that is correct.

SH stock tire size is 225/55/17; however I went up a 1/2 size for my winter tires. 225/60/17 Nokian Hakka R2s.
was there a picture in the post above? because there is nothing there now.

KYB posted the lengths of the SJ rear shock.

Extended Length 19.56
Compressed Length 13.38
Stroke Length 6.18

VS the SH rear shock:

Extended Length 18.93
Compressed Length 13.22
Stroke Length 5.71

I am about in to install king standard springs on my SH and I am thinking about using the SJ rear shock in hopes that it is firmer to handle the spring rate but the extra stroke could be nice consider Primitive sells shaft extenders primitive link. My only concern is the length from the lower mount eye hole to the spring perch is different where that could result in raising or lowering the vehicle.

I was able to get more information out of KYB this morning about the SJ vs SH strut, it would stand to seem that the SH and SJ share the same front housing with the same spring perch height, however the SJ does have a shorter stroke. The SJ front strut from kyb is cross listed for the 2013 crosstrek. Interestingly on kings website it lists the KSFS-55 front spring for the SH,SJ and crosstrek, so I would think it stands that one could use the KYB SJ front strut on the SH and it would be no different other than the spring being more “pre”loaded, as long as the sway bar is connected I doubt you would see any reduced droop. I looked at pics of the top assemblies on ebay and it looks like all the same upper spring perch and tophat. All that being said the front damping rate is almost double from the SH to SJ, and why people complain why their SJs are so stiff.

The rears seem a little different the SJ rear seems to have a ever so slightly higher spring seat but longer stroke, which would probably play nicely with the king or other lift spring especially considering the damping is so much higher.

At this point I am going to use the KYB SJ for my king spring install on my SH.

^ good info

also why people complain that their SHs are sloppy!
Update:

I installed the SJ rears kyb PN3410015 with king spring KSRS-56 on my SH. Im am happy to report that it rides great in the rear and seems to be better damped than expected, it feels significantly firmer and more confident in the rear. I think I would have not liked the kings on the normal SH rears based on my calibrated compressed by hand shock dyno. I did reuse the longer Closed-Cell foam bump stop from the SH over the shorter hard Rubber ones the kybs came with, I felt like the foams would give a more linear approach to bottom out over the rubbers.

A Very interesting development on the front, I messed up and ordered the wrong shock, I ordered 993484(SH11-13) and a 993485 (SJ), and yes the hand shock dyno would suggest the SJ are firmer than the SH11-13. Sure enough, at rest you can see that one of the shocks has a shorter shaft by about an inch in the pic. I started to pull on the 993485 shaft because before I figured out I had the wrong shock I though I got a defective shock, to my surprise i was able to pull the shaft out to the same length as the 993484 and then it would return back on its own. I did it a few times before it dawned on me there must an internal top out bump stop that would not have any impact on regular driving but might aid in some situations where the wheel droops fast(pothole maybe). But, basically they are the same and there is no reason you could not use an SJ front on a SH. Only other things of note, the spring perch look different but the king rest the same on them and I will need to double check the ABS tone line bracket it looks a bit different(same spot, just the SH09-10 use a bolt and both of these don't have a capture nut)

Hey TSR, when I search for a 2014 Forester (SJ) KYB shows me 339385 and 339386 for the front struts. Just curious about your part numbers for SJ? I'm putting SJ KYB's on my 2011 SH

sorry did see this till now, yup those are the part numbers i used, and 3410015 in the rear. I have 3 months of daily driving on them and I could not be happier.
