For the longest time i viewed cars as a liability, aka more expensive the car, more expensive to maintain. Then i had an existential breakdown haha.I decided I was sick of ballin around in my 1984 Datsun 720 (which by the way i love to death and will never give up).
My friends had always been into tuner cars... not civics and cavaliers thank you. Preludes and a4s etc. we had class after all. haha no offense to anyone btw. There i was stuck in my little truck not givin a damn.
Well my friend with the prelude threw a rod goin 140 god bless him and he traded it in as a down payment on a 09 wrx and my mother had just bought an 08 impreza. I looked at them with the smile on thier faces as the drove and thought of myself as i drove. I wanted that smile so the search began. My original choice was a last gen mazdaspeed 3 but i couldnt get over the fact that it was front wheel drive.
I have driven all kindsa different stuff and there is something about the way AWD sticks to the road. No exceptions. From there what do i have? I needed a shape... thinkin hot hatch. I cant get an impreza of any kind or im a copycat. Suzuki sx4? I DONT THINK SO. I need power.
Then one day as I beleived all hope was lost I stumbled upon a used car lot just outside of town and I saw it. Somethin i had heard about but never really considered. A black forester... wait is that a hood scoop? That cant be an xt can it?
<a href="http://s576.photobucket.com/albums/ss203/cannonbaal/?action=view&current=2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss203/cannonbaal/2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
I walked in and started to ask the woman at the desk if I could take a look at it and before i could finish my statement she smiled and asked if i would like a test drive. OF COURSE
I was skeptical at first but as soon as i turned the key somethin snapped. This was it. This was me. Perfection. The test drive was like an epiphany. Myself and the forester reached a state of synergy I can only describe as a mutual orgasm haha. When i returned I asked to speak to the man in charge. I handed him 350 bucks that day and have every other wednesday since. Hes a great guy and is lettin me make payments on my down payment ;).
111 000 miles
8900$
runs PERFECT
good deal?

SO THATS HOW I DISCOVERED IT. ANYWAYS just like another grand and Itll will actually be mine! Its gonna be my baby.

Using the resources you guys have provided (thanks) I have already planned out my route to xti. Anything anyone can suggest I would appreciate enormously. heres my current hot list.

Interior:
Boost Gauge
Recaro seats. (last priority)
Blue out my interior lights possibly.

Exterior:
Rear lip spoiler. (currently has rear duster) anyone know where i can find this?
removing the racks on top.
Either replacing the rims with 04 sti rims or painting the oems that same color.
Repaint exterior white and rims faded brick red with one of my designs on back QP (VERY last priority. only if I get another car and use this as my track or drag car, im sick of watching my friends race ya know?)

Underhood plans:
VF39 ( a any other suggestion here)
Cobb tuning crank pulley.
possibly light weight fly wheel.
Im still on ups about exhaust and cold air options
lemme know what you think

Suspension:
02 03 wrx sedan Kyb gr2 struts
either 02 03 wrx wagon swift or epic springs (either?)
cobb sway bar

thoughts?

Anything anyone can suggest I would appreciate enormously. here's my current hot list.

Interior:
Boost Gauge A nice discreet one, hopefully, not the 10" big as a wall clock variety found at Schuck's or Checkers!!
Recaro seats STi seats would look nice, bolt right in, and help accentuate the "XTI" build you're planning.
Blue out my interior lights possibly. Why? Blue is the most difficult to see at night - I'd go for red, like your Audi friends.

Exterior:
Rear lip spoiler. (currently has rear duster) anyone know where i can find this? There are several Subaru dealership vendors on here who can help you with this. IIRC, the item you seek is on a close-out of some sort, therefore you might get it at a decent price.
removing the racks on top.First mod - save gas!!
Either replacing the rims with 04 sti rims or painting the oems that same color.Paint doesn't look nearly as good as the original - go for the STi rims (in keeping with your "XTi" conversion.
Repaint exterior white and rims faded brick red with one of my designs on back QP (VERY last priority. only if I get another car and use this as my track or drag car, im sick of watching my friends race ya know?)??? Poor Subie!!

Underhood plans:
VF39 ( a any other suggestion here)Nice start - but you'll want to cool the air more efficiently as well. Consider an STi intercooler to match the larger turbo.
Cobb tuning crank pulley.Considered by several reputable shops in our neighborhood as creating a weak point for failure.
possibly light weight fly wheel. Not a bad idea.
Im still on ups about exhaust and cold air optionsI'd get a Stromung TBE with a high-flow cat, and be done with exhaust. CAI is going to be something to dress up your engine bay, but not really a huge HP gain until you go WAY larger on the turbo.
lemme know what you think

Suspension:
02 03 wrx sedan Kyb gr2 strutsVery firm!!
either 02 03 wrx wagon swift or epic springs (either?)Swifts work nicely IMHO, and we have Mann Engineering as a vendor who can fill your order for Swifts.
cobb sway bar$$$ - grab an STi rear swaybar, put some Kartboy endlinks on it, and you'll be good to go.

thoughts?
Thoughts are in red. Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you have your plans laid out nicely, but I really noticed something important missing from your list.

BRAKES. You gotta be able to stop faster than you can go. Upgrade those BEFORE you upgrade the power side of things. Hawk pads, stainless lines, some good slotted (not cross-drilled) rotors will really help in that department, and save you some grief later on down the road.

Welcome to the forum from oregon!

It looks like you got a great deal on an '04XT! I spent what seems like forever looking for an '04XT, finally settled for an '07 FSXT... not that I'm complaining. Yes, I know what you mean when you say, "and so it begins"!

This is exactly why i joined this forum... how could i have forgotten brakes... haha thanks for all the input roo

The paint thing would only be entertained if I was going to get it done by like a spray god. and if i could afford to have this and another car entirely as my daily driver.

Welcome to the forum from Niagara Falls!
All of your ideas sound decent, and I agree with Roo on most things...

The VF39 is a great choice, but also consider the VF43 which is nearly identical aside from a few casting changes to make it more durable.
The best bet on a decent "stealth" exhaust would be to play around with a few different Downpipe/mid-pipe/axleback combos to find exactly what you're after sound wise.
I'm running the WRX sedan GR-2's and they're great with the MY05 STi springs I'm running, though some may want the car to sit a little lower.

Have yourself a look at some of the different examples in the Journal section, lots of things have already been tried and it may just be a matter of finding the combinations you want through other member's findings.

For under hood upgrades:
STI uppipe would be first! The stock catted one is mostly a liability, and if you just put a resistor in the EGT plug you wont get a cel (the EGT probe is only there to check the temp of the uppipe cat, which you wont have anymore)
If you're going to do a VF39, you should probably also do an STI or similar intercooler

I'd recommend going stage 2 first before doing the vf39 to see if you really need that power. I'd recommend going with a nice turboback that utilizes a bellmouth downpipe and a highflow cat (the cobb one is quite good, as are a number of others, if you can find a helix catted downpipe, I'd recommend that as the best downpipe for the money)

For brakes, just get some nice coated or uncoated blanks (theres lots of salt used here so I went with the centric coated rotors to stop them from rusting) and some good pads (hawk hps are a decent choice for everyday use). I'd suggest staying away from even slotted rotors, no benefit and I've found they tend to become less smooth with age and tend to cause less even wear than if you had just used cheaper blank rotors (theres absolutely no reason to go with high end "racing" rotors as most aren't even designed for racing, if you want some very high end rotors look at stoptech or DBA)

For suspension, since you're at 111,000 miles you'll probably want new struts no matter what route you go, so this is a good chance to get a nice setup. Your idea is good, however I've found that most aftermarket springs designed for the wrx end up dropping the car too much without giving enough of an increase in spring rate. I'd maybe start out with the GR-2's on stock wrx springs and an STI rsb.
