They mounted and balanced a brand new set of tires for me the other day. I didn't stick around to watch the process, because I've been there before without incident. The first time I drove on them at freeway speeds I knew something was wrong. They vibrated badly and I had severe pulling to one side, especially during acceleration.

Pulled into the nearest air station and found this:
Front:
Left=29 psi Right=32 psi
Rear:
Both 28 psi

Called then immediately to complain about the vibration and the pressures that I found. They asked me to comeback for an inspection. This time I watched them do everything from the time the car entered the bay. 3 of the 4 tires were not properly balanced.
According to one employee, this happens often. There were no attempts to apologize or explain why this occurred.

If you choose to shop at America's Tire in Union City, CA be sure to watch them the ENTIRE time or suffer the consequences.

Go figure. I go to my brothers Snap-On 3-point balancer. Over enough time the wheels eventually work themselves back to full balance with no weight. No shop will ever use 3-point. Otherwise they cant sell that anymore except for maybe 3-5 times, and that's it.

How does the tire balance itself? I've never had an unbalanced tire get better on it's own.

What is the difference between a typical Hunter balance machine and the Snap-on 3 point?

2 point and 3 point. Also it won't per say balance it self day/night. It takes at least 3 balances. I'm sure. I've never got to have it done enough to be able to tell, but my brother races motorcycles and keeps up on his pickup and cars rather well.

I'm thinking the 2 point makes the wheel (not visibly) oblong. Or the weights bring the oblong out of the rim.

The hunter machines are quite good as they match the tire to the wheel, minimizing the need for weights if the mechanic goes through with all of that. I've noticed quite a few places will just mount the tire on the wheel, lined up randomly and then balance it.

The tires still feel unbalanced at speeds near and above 80mph. I'm not sure if I should bring them back or have a better shop do it again. The place I am considering has a Hunter GSP9700 Roadforce Balancer. They are the best alignment shop around, too.

The gsp9700 can make pretty much anything perfectly balanced. I would try that route. You could also have defective tires?

Same experience. I had a new set of tires from from 3 weeks ago. I checked the pressures with a digital gauge when I got home and they are 38, 35, 37 and 44!!!

I had always love their service. But I'll be alot more careful from now on.

+1-1=0 For America's Tire (Union City, CA)

They are doing their best to correct the balance issue (even though the first balance/mounting was botched). This morning they balanced the tires again. A few of the tires were off by 0.25-0.50 oz?, but the vibration is gone.

Unfortunately, one wheel seemed slightly bent. DOH! It was on the front and was switched to the back this time. I am going to put it up front again to confirm the cause of the vibration.

BTW- I was told that the Fremont store has the capability to road force balance and x-ray.
