i have a 99 forester with the single cam 2.5. I am taking it down for maintenance the head gaskets are bad(no coolant in the oil though) and i noticed an odd noise idle is fine, full throttle is fine, but above 1800 especially 2500 there is a rattle just maintaining rpms. it does it on the highway too. anyone on here think its rod knock, or anything else for that matter? it sounds like a rattle.
How many miles on the ticker? Maybe a bearing starting to go. My sons '99 started knockin' at abut 130K. We changed the motor before it every went out completely.
Usually "rattle" is not something I would call a rod knock.
I'm guessing you've got something much simpler, heat shields, maybe suspension, or interior rattle.
its not really a rattle... more like a clatter. it does sound like metal on metal and its not heat Shields. and yeah it does vary on throttle input. say you are driving down the road at 65. it makes noise plus or minus like 10 percent of throttle needed to hold speed. it can be done in neutral as well. and it has 227,150 on it.
