hopefully a quick question, but when did the australian delivered GT (ie SF model) change from a 4-bolt gearbox to 8-bolt?

other than looking at the engine and gearbox, is there any way by telling via the VIN or even year? was it when they went to the wider tail lights? etc

if it is vin (and going off carsales research), should it be VINs starting like JF2SF5KD32G? (vs the older JF2SF5KD3YG VINs)

or did the SF never get the 8-bolt setup???

In the US, it was 99 and newer. For Australian imports, I guess that would mean that mid-year 1998 models had the 8 bolt.

They are interchangeable, with only minor modifications, though.

yeah i know they are interchangeable - but would prefer to get an 8 bolt turbo engine - mainly because i have an 8 bolt dual range box sitting downstairs in my garage, but also because it's newer (even though slightly)
