Will 235/40/18 tyres be fine on 18x7J rims on my XT with WRX springs and shocks? The springs and shocks have lowered my Forester by 35mm. The offset of the rims is 50-something millimetres, I think it was 52.

Sorry, there's nothing more boring that "will they fit" posts, but my reading points to 7.5J rims upwards being optimal and I'm about to shell out some serious money on tyres. I've currently got 225/45/18 tyres which are fine. 215's are standard issue on those rims (from a Legacy GT).

I would think that that you need a wider wheel then 7" to fit a 235. I think that you would need a 7.5" at the least, running an 8" would be optimal.

My trusted Les Schwab tire guy told me for a Toyo Proxes 4, 235 tire, a 7.5" wheel width is optimal, so you can go on either side of that size. IMO, the 235/50-17x7" on the '03 X looks just about perfect. I have 235/45-18x7.5 on my '07 & the fit is very good. :wink:

I may be able to help. Do you have the wheels on your forester now? What year is your forester and what year vehicle did your WRX Wheels come from? a 235/40R18 is a bit too wide for a 7" wide wheel. I believe 8" in the recommended min by most tire manufacturers.

You're confirming my worry. I've seen many guys with 235's on 7.5J but not on 7J.

But looking at the 225/45 Bridgestone RE50A's that are on now there looks like there's 10mm to add in there comfortably. I would just go for the 225/45/18s again but they're an odd size and therefore very expensive.

Thanks DTD, yes they're on now, Legacy GT 18" wheels with WRX suspension on my 2006 FXT. Would the make of tyre affect this recommendation?

Bridgestone recommends an 8" wide wheel at minimum. Mounting this tire on your 7" wide wheels will void any warranties associated with the tire and you won't get the full potential out of them either. The 225/45R18 size is really ideal for your set up.
