2020 - Sport - Rotors and pads - recommendations?

766 Views 36 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  lowellb
So I took my car in for an inspection and my guy let me know my rotors and breaks are SHOT. 2020 forester sport with 35k.

I kind of figured they were anyway, I was getting so shaking when breaking and some squealing.

Anyway, he let me go and passed me since he is a close family friend. He knows I like to normally do my own work.

This is a relm I never got into though. NO idea what to even look for when buying rotors and breaks.

Anyone have any recommendations?

If under 3yrs & 36K. I'd be talking warranty work.

just hit 3 years and just hit 37k.
It doesn't cost or hurt to ask about warranty at the dealership...

ask what?

Im going to do this all myself, I normally avoid the dealer at all cost. Just wanted to see what rotors and breaks people use here.
as @aleekat mentioned, warranty... I avoid the dealer as well but they might cover it...

yeah id rather not waste my time asking them when im over 3 years/36k while this also being prob not a thing even covered.
Subaru used to cover wear items. No idea if they still do.
At 33K dealer told me I needed brakes and rotors turned. I called SOA and explain it. Was told if pads were at 2mm it would be covered. They weren't but they sent me a credit for $300 good for a year. The suggested I call them.

I am in the tri state area where it is heavy trafficed and I just dont want to hear them tell me how its a wear item.
Having researched doing brakes on my 2019. Only think different is electronic parking brake on the rear. As far a brands, didn't get that far.

Yes I'm aware of that
@sonofjack1337 You have not specified what you're looking for in terms of brake requirements and driving style......So no way to answer your question "

Live in suburbs outside NYC. Commute to work. Lot of highway miles
@sonofjack1337 I usually buy what is called Daily Driver Grade when I search on rockauto.com
Brakes are covered under the 36/3K warranty.
I replaced my brakes with OEM pads and rotors sourced from an online vendor. Had a local shop install as well as change the brake fluid relatively inexpensively compared to the dealer.

From what I understand, you cannot turn/make smooth the rear rotors due to their design, so they had to be replaced. The front rotors I was able to turn.

Apparently Akebono is the OEM manufacturer of brakes, so look for those online if you want to keep it original.
Only Brake Pads are covered under 3yr 36k warranty (wear item section).. They have to be totally shot (1mm or metal to metal).
My Subaru service advisor told me this because I just had them check my brakes because I had some issues.
At first: I went with "cheap" from rockauto and ended up with squeals. After using them for a couple of years, and my wife complaining about the squeals in reverse, I decided to spend a bit more money and went with the Powerstop drilled and slotted Rotors from the "High Performance" section + the Bosch ceramic pads from the Premium section. Zero regrets! The squeal went away, never to return, and I was amazed at how much more stopping-power I ended up with!

Yes, you can go cheap, but the saying is true: "You get what you pay for"...

Seeing you're from NYC area: loads of salt being used? Make sure you clean up your caliper brackets really well and grease them up before putting the glide-clips on!
So I am looking at powerstop.

I really don't see the need for the drilled and slotted rotors? I hear they are prone to cracking and also wear pads a lot faster?

Aolmost everywhere has the normal soild rotors out of stock from powerstop. Found 1 site that would ship them out in early july.

The drilled/slotted rotors are in stock though, should I just get them?
