2019 - Radio comes on at start! - way to stop? (merged thread)

- Can't figure out why the radio comes on after starting or stopping the car (the push button starts or stop).
So I noticed this too and consider it either a minor bug or a poorly implemented feature. This is tied to the new key-off power feature, where the infotainment stays on after you turn the car off until you open the door (you can also roll up/down the windows). Suppose you use a MEDIA input via USB ports (your phone, iPod, USB stick). In that case, those USB ports lose power at key-off, and the infotainment automatically switches to the last used radio input, the same way as if you would abruptly disconnect your media when driving. It has startled me many times already. I wish it would just mute if a media input is playing at key-off.

Incidentally, has anyone else noticed that the AM volume is about 1/2 as loud as FM and SXM? Or is it just mine? If I'm listening to FM at 15, I have to turn it to 25 to listen to AM at the same volume.

stop radio automatically turning on?

Figured I didn't need to start a separate thread, but will if y'all think it is important enough. Just got 2019 blue sport, updated audio, screen, lift gate, dimming mirrors. Love it. Very happy to be back in a foz. Still love our outback too.

Question: radio automatically turns on every time we start the car. I do not like that. Can I stop it from doing so?

Anybody have any tricks to keep the radio from coming on automatically when starting the car?

So nobody has any tricks to keep the radio from coming on automatically when starting the car?
Looks like you like to turn it on and off as you wish. In 2018 radio I push shortly Volume button and it turns radio off. Next time you start the engine, the display will turn on, show you starting message and went off shortly after. No music or any other sounds. I assume same should work for 2019.
Will this work for you?
BTW, I don't think following is in manual - long press and hold on Volume button turn the screen off. Very helpful when you driving in the darkness. Doesn't bothers me and turns back on with any actions.

Try turning the volume down to zero. I think it will come back on the same.....?

Yup! Hold down the radio power button for four seconds. Just pressing it will only temporarily mute the audio, like when you want to talk to someone. To actually turn the radio off, you must hold it down. The radio will still be off the next time you start your car.

Questions about the 19 Forester headunit

Question about the 19 Forester headunit based on 18-19 Outback headunit problem:

1) Does 19 Forester headunit stays OFF when you start the car or it always turns ON?
2) Does it turn ON automatically when you start the car if it it was ON before you turned the car OFF?
3) When you turn it ON, does it continue to play music same music from same media?
3.1) Does it remember where the music stopped?

Is there a way to set the radio so that it does not come on (loud) automatically at every start? I have a 2019 Sport with HK.

yes, this bugged me a bit as well. others may certainly correct me here if I am mistaken, but:

I believe if you hold the volume knob button down for a few seconds, it will "sleep" the head unit. (I think the screen remains powered on, it's just all black from what I can tell at night) I'm fairly certain it will remain in this mode when you shut off and restart the car.

Another solution is to set SiriusXM channel 0 as your default radio favorite and leave it set there (which is a silent channel). Useful if you use Carplay or Android Auto and don't want the radio to suddenly start blaring when you unplug your phone at the end of a trip.

I just make it a point to turn the volume to 0 when I park.

Forester 2019 radio always automatically on?

I have a new 2019 Forester Sport.

My radio ALWAYS turns on by default when I turn on the ignition or remote start. I don't always want it on, especially if I am not even in the vehicle running the remote start to warm it up. I have even made it a point to always do a long hold on the radio knob to turn off the radio and shut down the display screen prior to shutting down the engine. 1) The next time I enter the car & turn on the ignition through the Start/Stop button or Remote Start, the radio is on again. 2) Also, before I park, I make sure my radio is already off if I was using it. I shut down the engine, but the display screen remains on. I have stayed inside the car waiting for others to arrive with the engine off but there is a humming noise from the radio and the display screen is still lit telling me the vehicle is consuming my battery even though the engine and radio are off. The only time it truly turns off is if I purposely open and close my door which is absolutely annoying!

Does this happen to everyone else's 2019 Forester Sport?

It functions as it’s supposed to. Granted it’s a pain but nothing is wrong with unit. Unit will turn on at each ignition-on and play at whatever the volume that was last set prior to exiting vehicle.

+1. I just wish it wasn't supposed to work the way it does. The quirkiness of how it is designed to work is maddening as well as perplexing.

I also wish it would have the option to turn off when I shut off the engine. I don't need background music as I'm gathering my stuff and exiting the car.

This behavior had afflicted the Impreza since 2017. The HU seems the weakest link on this car in many ways. :surprise:

One work-around folks reported is to plug an audio plug (salvaged from a broken headset) into the input jack, as that turns off the speakers. Don't know it that is still an option on the 2019 or if they have gone entirely with USB. Of course, then you have to remove the plug to listen to things.

Every vehicle I’ve ever owned has been this way.

Yes. I take it you have the 8" LCD display? I have this and I am pretty sure that annoying noise is a fan in back of the LCD unit to help keep it cool.
On my Premium with 6.5" screen, when I do a short press of the volume/power button the sound is muted. If I leave it like this, shutdown the vehicle, exit, comeback and startup again, the radio will resume at the volume prior to muting. With a long press, the system turns off with the screen dark. It remains off on the next startup of the vehicle until I select it to be on. Maybe there's something funky with the 8" version that isn't present on the 6.5"? If that's the case, I'm glad I didn't upgrade.

People have been complaining about this, so I did an experiment with my '19 Sport with 8" HK system.

1) I turned the entire unit off when I got home (you have to press and hold the power button for a few seconds; just hitting it mutes it), and when I turned on the car this morning, it was still off.
2) Yes.
3) 99% of the time I leave it on Sirius XM and it returns to the same channel. I would have to check about the FM radio, but I guess it should work the same way.

That does sound super annoying. I have a Sport (w/8" HK), too, and was curious to see if mine did the same. However, when I shut my head unit off, it stays off at the next start. I had it set to Sirius instead of FM radio; don't think that should really make a difference though?
