2019 - Auto dimming rear view mirror - anyone tried to install one?

14801 Views 64 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  netnode
Hey guys,

I'm wondering if anyone in Australia has tried to wire up an auto dimming rear view mirror into a Forester?
Is there a hidden cable in the roof line that connects to the mirror? There's a cut out in the roof lining for cables to run out, so I'm assuming so. (This is based on people in the US doing this.)

Any information is appreciated.

Thank you!

I would love to know the answer to this too ! I had a Golf Alltrack that had this feature and it was awesome.......
Here are the installation instructions: https://techinfo.subaru.com/stis/doc/accInstallGuide/H501SSG203_H501SSG304_2019 Forester.pdf

It appears that there may be a "pre-arranged vehicle connector." There is a wire included with the mirror that will connect to this.
It may be worthwhile to see if you have that connection in your Forester.

There is another thread on the topic, though it isn't much help:

Good luck!
Awesome, thanks for that. I found that thread previously, but the instructions are a good bit of info. I'm wondering if the auto dimming rear view mirror is basically the same from Subaru models i.e. buying or (ripping out) the mirror/ harness from the current gen XV and connecting it.
G'day, first post on here.
Trading in my Eclipse Cross Exceed for a 2019 Forester 2.5i-S.
Waiting on the boat to dock to get the Forester.
Disappointed that the mirror is not auto dimming.
That said, I don't mind buying one from the USA if I am able to install it into the new Forester?
Finding this post is a help, however, I can't find anybody in Oz that has done the install.
Has anyone replaced the manual mirror with an auto one and how did it go please?
It's a port installed option in the US with the wireing already in place. Good luck.
Subaru needs to market and allow authorized 3rd party sellers to offer “Rearview Mirror Upgrades” with STARLINK and/or Auto Dim functions. GM’s OnStar does this (sure they’ve been out longer) so Subaru should be able to too.
I’d imagine sales would increase due to such a popular convenience feature.
Surely someone in Australia has checked to see if they have a plug for a dimming mirror? Preferably a 2019 or 2020 model?

I asked the dealer and was told their mechanics don't know, bloody hopeless.
I asked Subaru and here is their reply.

The current Forester in the Australian market does not have any additional connectors for an accessory such as an auto dimming mirror. The Subaru Team.
Thats a shame. I asked about this feature of them 4 years ago and they said they would look into it for future models.

Subaru Aust are hopeless.

You asked 4 years back for this and another bloke asked them 4 years ago if they would make the Navi alert notifications (red light camera etc) verbal and they also said then, we will look into it.

Here we are years later and nothing, how difficult could it be?
Probably just two wires need to be routed via the head liner to an accessory fuse. May plunge and buy a mirror from the States and have an auto electrician wire her up.
Does anyone know to which fuse # you can run the wire to? Subaru in Colombia also sucks and doesn’t know how to correctly install the mirror.

How did you get on, did you buy one and if so from where?

Not sure if anyone is still following this thread, I have just purchased a 2022 Forester Sports, and was lucky enough to have a family member living and working in the US for Subaru give me almost every accessory that Subaru America make. A auto dimming mirror was included H501SSG303, this turns out to be the wrong part for a Subaru Forester, but I did go ahead with my brother inlay who is a Japanese trained Subaru & Sti Mechanical Engineer.

The wiring harness needed is not installed in Australian Models, that said we think we can locate the correct part number and complete an install, once I have all the information, I let the forum know. The correct mirror for my Subaru is Auto Dimming Mirror With - Subaru (H501SSG305), you need to make sure you buy the correct mirror for your model. If your interest they are manufactured by Gentex Corporation www.gentex.com.

I am got a Auto-Dimming Exterior Mirror With Approach - Subaru (J205SFL401) that dimming in unison with the Auto-Dimming (Interior) Mirror, which makes me think that it not just a case of provide a power supply to Auto Dimming Mirror, I think the pre-installed harness is connected to the CANBUS. There a CANBUS harness in the overhead console connected to Eyesight. I believe that there is a harness on the American Model that connect to this CANBUS connector.
