my 2017 Forester would Not start in Park. Engine turned over, lights flashed etc but not start. Did it 3 times. My wife said "let me try". She jiggled the gear shift up and down from park to drive. put it back in Park and IT STARTED. I can't find anything on web to explain. your sage advice is appreciated.

I would start by checking the battery. Could be just the cold weather causing it to act up. Had a similar issue on my honda cr-v a month ago. It could just be a coincidence that it started after moving the shifter. See if you can consistently reproduce the issue.

The Park position is sensed by it’s location. My 2015 has acted like it was not fully off when I pushed the start/stop button. Car turned off, but a bell dinged when I opened the door. I found that I could put the brake on and cycle through the P,N,D positions. And it has worked fine for weeks.
The transmission position sensor is weak.

sensor

I just read about a failing transmission range sensor which, if working properly, tells computer what gear it is in. One symptom is that the engine will not start.. anybody aware of this?? could it be related to the CVT transmission issues with Subi's??
