Hi,

I’ve just bought used forester XT and I’ve observed that when starting cold, for the first 30 seconds or so I can hear this clicking noise:

Then it goes away shortyly, usually after i accelerate the car to start running.

Also, there is second kind of noise, that sounds like clicking/grinding - can’t describe properly but it sounds very metallic. It shows up around 3-4k rpm and only on cold engine. You can hear it at 0:04 and a little bit at 0:17-0:20 in this video:

And again, after few moments it goes away (this video was shot couple of minutes after starting engine and by the end of the video i was unable to replicate the noise).

Is it normal? Doesn’t sound like normal to me. Any ideas?

For the first noise - not sure... sticky lifter?

For noise #2 - that "whoosh" may just have to do with the turbo and the wastegate... Did the previous owner do any modifications?

I'm after initial diagnosis, it seems there is some exhaust leakage, might be at manifold, might be somewhere else. I've set up service visit next week and we'll see from there.
