Would you believe ABFoz, a friend of mine in England wrote to me at the same time we were having this problem telling me about his Landrover Defender that also had the exact same issue.
Yes, it's pretty common with modern CRD diesels with DPFs.

Even Toyota's 1GD-FTV 2.8L diesel has the same issue, although related to the sealing around the air intake filter! The seals are ineffective, would suck so much dirt and dust, then confuse the MAF sensor, making the engine run rich, clogging the DPF much more often. They had so much backlash from that but it may have helped if they admitted the manufacturing defect instead of deny it to death.
