I’ve got a ’15 XT that’s had issues with blowing smoke out the exhaust during WOT since about 10k miles. I’ve visited the dealer *many* times about this issue, but have repeatedly heard “that’s just how turbo cars are”.

I’m now at 47k and the issue continues to get worse. Previously, if I went WOT I might see some smoke for one or two pulls, then not again for a few weeks. Now a days, when I go WOT, I see a LOT more smoke and it happens fairly consistently.

This sounds like carbon buildup, but would it be consistent with my mileage? Is the solution still a $800 walnut blasting? And when does the cleaning become necessary?

Yeesh, really? I had read the Danoz thread years ago, but thought the consensus was that the clamps didn't really help with the issue and it was actually carbon... Did I get that all wrong?

I'm no expert, but I don't believe smoke during WOT is a carbon buildup issue. I cured my FXT of this by replacing the intake clamps https://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f207/danoz-fix-fa20dit-turbo-clamps-318129/ and adding oil catch cans (or AOS - air-oil separator).

Your dealer told you the correct answer...
Blowing smoke out the exhaust during WOT is normal with turbo.
WOT clean the turbo and exhaust system.
More you use turbo less smoke thats it...

I agree. I use very little boost and when I get on it..lots of smoke. Uses zero oil so its not oil.

I doubt it's anything more than low flowing your fuel injectors which is allowing carbon buildup on the injector which makes poor atomization so when you go WOT and use higher injector dirty you get crap burn which smokes.

At 14k miles I make use of the throttle often and never once seen smoke even as I'm looking for it. Clean as a whistle. Runs real good too.

I did follow the danoz fix though from the beginning and have the better clamps on in case a vacuum leak is related.
