If I push on the seating surface lightly with my hand with just a few lbs of pressure mine comes on too. It thinks someone is sitting there and wants them to buckle up... lol

When I remove my hand it dings a handful more times and then shuts off resuming the Passenger airbag off display on the MFD.

That's not right, IMO. There's supposed to be a minimum weight before the airbags get armed. At least there has been in other cars I've had.

Agree. I keep my work bag containing an iPad or laptop and other stuff on the passenger seat daily and it never sets off the alarm.

Wow! This same thing happened to me in my 2014 today. Cell phone sitting in the passenger seat and the passenger seat belt warning light going on. It stopped after I moved the cell phone to the cup holder.

Cell phones are constantly radiating a signal to keep a link with the nearest cell tower. RF interference to the sensor in the seat is a possibility. Turn the phone off and then lay it in the seat. I'm betting the problem goes away.

I've occasionally used my kindle fire hd to read to me as I drive. Putting it on the passenger seat does the same thing. Makes me think there's an electromagnetic effect.

My phone in the passenger seat has no effect... I do not think it is due to a cell signal.

I did put a watermelon in my passenger seat and I had to buckle the belt. :icon_biggrin:

I just checked mine; same result ... but I didn't try a watermelon, used a gallon of anti-freeze.

I guess I was wrong about the RF interference. I even called the phone with no effect.

There is a special tool that is just a big weighted butt shape used to calibrate the occupancy sensor. Got a damn good laugh back in the day when that showed up with the parts driver.

I have the same problem!
When I put my iPhone (connected with usb for charging) on the seat, the light is on. However, when I put my backpack even with laptop on the seat, the light is not on.
What kind of phones you guys have?

I found a water bottle, gloves and my iPhone sets mine off SOME TIMES. But not all the time, so I live with it for now.

Now as far as the key fob, have I said I do not like the one piece design yet?

This g-d dumb car had the passenger seat belt warning go off 2 weeks ago with a blackberry, granola bar and a banana on the passenger seat.

My <10# laptop sets it off regularly.

First and last Subaru for me. Waaaaay too many basic oversights and design flaws.

Ok, sorry to erase the problems, but you are all way off base. The new passenger detection system uses a sensor system the senses electrical fields of the occupant or electronic device. Its not weight at all; just rest your hand on it without applying weight and it will "see" it. Page 1-46 of the owners manual.
"The occupant detection system sensor is
installed under the seat upholstery and
monitors the physique and posture of the
front passenger. Using this information,
the occupant detection system determines
whether the front passenger’s SRS frontal
airbag should be deployed or not.
The occupant detection system may not
inflate the front passenger’s SRS frontal
airbag even when the driver’s SRS frontal
airbag deploys. This is normal"
and page 1-47
"If the front passenger’s seat cushion is
wet, this may adversely affect the ability of
the system to determine deployment."
I am having issues with cut and paste- so pull out the owners manual and read upon it yourselves.

If you get the passenger seat wet, it will cause a light until it dries. Have seen 2 of these so far, both related to cleaning of the seats.
