Anyone have this happen to you?

I don't remember reading about this anywhere before, but I was on my way to pick someone up from the Airport last night and suddenly I saw a Message alert on my HK HU.

I hit the button and the lady said "Landed" (SMS from the friend I was picking up) . Then it had some preset replies I could send and I tried to send one but it said the message failed ... error ... something.

The reply didn't work, but its still pretty cool!!

Seems like receiving a text on the HU could be pretty cool. Sending a reply is pretty direct violation of most state laws about texting while driving. Not really surprised the reply failed.

Yeah mine does it. But it is very hit and miss as to when it will work, but I think it has a lot to do with the phone you are using. Worst thing I have had was had to re-pair my phone and then it spent 30 mins flashing up every single text message I had gotten over the last week.

They're just preset one liners like "I'm driving, call you back later" or something like that. Just select and hit send.

This. My wife and her mother like to bombard me with a dozen texts within a few minutes instead of saving up one long message. NOTHING is more frustrating when you are relying on your Navigation screen and it gets completely blocked by these messages. You manually have to clear the screen for each one, a two button press process! So annoying. I shut that **** off right quick! It's an optional setting in your phone's bluetooth setting (Settings>Bluetooth> (i) next to CAR MULTIMEDIA>Show Notifications (On/Off) I thought having Siri would maybe allow me to reply hands-free, but I haven't gotten that to work, Siri has been making my HU think I'm making a call, it's weird and doesn't work.

Has anyone gotten the reply function to work? I have tried it while in park and it still gives me the message failed error?

Nope haven't gotten the reply to work. As far as the head unit with the screen reading text messages on your phone under bluetooth if you have notifications turn it on and it should work.

Cannot setup Pop-up Texting

Hi,
I am new to this forum and a proud owner of a 2014 Forester which I purchased in October 2013. The Bluetooth Radio/Nav system worked fine for two months and then stopped. The dealer ordered a new radio in January and they just installed it yesterday. My phone paired, connected and received calls with no problem. However, I really really need text messages to pop-up along with the list of response options as it did before. I have the same phone, (Droid Razr Maxx HD), as I did before and it is HFP and MAP compatible.
The owners manual says to Hit Messages to Retrieve Messages and once I am in there I can adjust the Settings to allow the Pop-up texting. However, when I Hit Messages, I get "Messages not Retrieved" and hence I cannot get into the next screen to adjust the Settings. I don't particularly care to even receive the old messages but mostly want to advance to the next screen to access the Settings.
Any ideas?

On mine the pop-up messaging works periodically and - when it does - its more annoying than not. I've noticed it seems to work well with certain Verizon locations and not at all with others. When I travelled to Kentucky it was working very well, but in Mississippi it seemed to depend on what tower I was being serviced by. Anyway, once they started popping up - it would list every message no matter how long ago I got it and whether I had already viewed it or not. In the end, I turned it off. For the record I use a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3. The bluetooth calling functionally always has worked spot on - just not the texting.

Overall, I really have come to like the Nav system (I know others do not) - but the pop-up texting is annoying.

Pop-Up Texting

Thanks for a reply. It seems that either no one knows what I mean, or don't know the fix. Grrrr. I really liked the pop-up texting. My family communicates that way 90% of the time and even if it can be annoying, I prefer to not have to pull over to see if it is important.
I'm not sure that the Service Department at the Dealer will be able to help. At least, not the one near me. They are more adept at the things under the hood. They need a tech person.

If you find out more on this, please come back and update us all. The main thing that annoys me is that the Aha Radio app - which I love - only works every other time I start the car. If the Aha Radio button doesn't light up when I start that car - NOTHING can get it to unless I turn car off and restart. I've tried unpairing/repairing, deleting the app data and cache on the phone, etc. Nothing works except turning car off, waiting a second, and turning it back on.

Have you had the Nav upgrade? That is supposed to fix the AHA problem. I had the same issues as you and wound up deleting the app from my phone. Since I had the upgrade, I haven't tried it again. Too frustrating the first time around. I am really annoyed with this. I have waited a long time to get a BRAND new car and then paying extra for the bells and whistles that do not work!!
I am bringing my car in today to see about the Pop-up texting issue and I do not have much faith in it being resolved. I will let you know.

The latest NAV firmware came on the car (purchased in late November). I love the Aha Radio and when it works it works great. The sound quality is fantastic and I love the channel selection. But, if I get to my destination, turn the car off, then get back in and restart, the Aha won't work until the next time I start the car.

On the text pop-ups you may want to try pairing someone else's phone (I heard the Motorola phones and the Nexus' work best) to see if the problem is related to your specific phone/carrier.

My text pop-ups worked but not consistently. I didn't see the pop-up when I receivde the message but when I switch from one cell tower to another and then only with certain towers. There are a couple of points along my regular route when I know that the pop-ups will appear, and then I'll get 15 or 20 at once to the point of annoyance. I ended up disabling it.

I just recently purchased a Forester with the Navigation, and although I can get the phone and phone book to work, I am have not been successful in getting the text messages or email to work. I am using a Samsung Note 2 phone, does anyone have any suggestions???

wjw, It seems as if people with samsung phones are frequently having pairing problems. Try searching the forum for Samsung Bluetooth if someone doesn't post a response.

My biggest complaint with the texts going to the head unit is the issue of listening to the music on my phone via bluetooth. Every time someone texts me, it starts the song over from the beginning. Every. Single. Time.

Stock head unit and nokia 1520 text messaging works great for me

I don't know if this is what you guys are looking for, but I can reply to text messages by dictating aloud with my Nokia 1520 and it works every time.
