Actually asking for a friend...;-)

Is there any way to find out for real if head gaskets have been done? Would that show on a Carfax?

Any advice/thoughts re price, questions to ask, very much appreciated!!

Foz on!

Repairs on a Carfax only show up if a shop reports them. A so-called "clean" Carfax should never be a green light to purchase a used vehicle. At best a "clean" Carfax is a yellow flag to proceed with caution. That being said, a Carfax may help you rule out a purchase as it may/might reveal a red flag such as an accident (if reported by body shop), multiple ownership, rustbelt registrations, etc.

Ask for the maintenance history of the car. How often was the engine oil, transmission, diff and brake fluids changed? A Carfax may or may not show all maintenance. Here's the recommended maintenance schedule for the 2012 Forester:
<2012 Subaru maintenance schedule and new car break-in period>

It's more likely that a 2012 is going have an oil consumption problem than a head gasket issue. In 2011, Subaru introduced a new FB25 engine to the Forester which virtually eliminated head gasket failures. However head gaskets are always at risk if an engine overheats.

Before purchasing any used vehicle you should have a PRE-purchase inspection by a mechanic of YOUR choice, preferably one familiar with Subarus.

It's close to a 12 year old vehicle. The only thing to look for is the service records. If the owner does not have those,
look for a car that has them.

A CarFax is nice but many times does not show the complete history of a vehicle.

Service records, service records, service records. These engines tend to leak oil at different spots around the timing chain cover. While not a deal breaker, assume that any leak found there will never be fixed, due to the difficulty and expense.
Have the vehicle inspected top to bottom. Find a good shop that knows what they’re doing. How many previous owners? If it’s more than one, I would keep looking. A certified pre owned Subaru is probably the best bet.

If you look closely at the head gaskets, which are visible without removing anything from the engine compartment, you should be able to tell if it is a single layer of metal sandwiched with paper (original stock), or multi-layered metal which would be the newer version.
I don't think you can buy an officially certified 2012 Forester with an extended warranty anymore. Head gaskets are very rarely an issue on a 2012 and it has a timing chain that should be good for the life of the engine. It may consume some oil so it's a good move to regularly check the oil level and never let it get too low. It is always a good move to have your own paid inspection done. There is also a possibility that sometime in its life, it got a new short block as part of a Subaru settlement for excess oil consumption
I bought my 2011 almost 4 years ago and it had 3 previous owners and no records. Car Fax showed no accidents but that was in error and it turned out to have been involved in a very minor fender bender with caused 3 K in damage claims. I brought it to a provincial official inspection center and like I thought based on my inspection and test drive the car was in very good shape and passed on every single item. It's been a good vehicle and not that bad to maintain.
