I have an 09 turbo forester with an automatic transmission. It spun a bearing in the engine and I recently replaced the short block. Put it all back together tonight and it wouldn't shift into gear. The transmission was so low on fluid that it didn't show up on the dipstick.

I went ahead and drained the front differential and changed its gear oil, and topped up the atf with dexmerc III.

Now, it shifts into gear, but the transmission slips as if it's a manual that needs a new clutch.

I only drove it out of the garage and into the road about 50 yards. I didn't think it would be wise to drive it further, so I backed it back to the driveway and parked it. It does seem to slip less in reverse than it does in drive.

Any ideas what to check?
