@Crosstreck1994# I don't know if you understand what sort of vehicle the OP has. This isn't just any old SG Forester. The '07-'08 XT Sports 5-speed is the Holy Grail of Foresters. Approximately 500 were imported to North America in '07 and 300 in '08. It's not the sort of car you throw up on Craigslist and sell to some 17-year old with $12K of mommy and daddy's money who will inevitably wrap it around a utility pole doing 130 in a residential neigborhood.
There's a LOT more than sentimental value at stake.
Fine, if it is as you say it is, it is a extremely rare, vintage automobile that is a collectors item that Subaru enthusiasts will most highly value and pay for. So do you want a collector's item that you are going to meticulously operate, store and maintain or do you need practical transportation?
Maybe the price should be $15 or $20k, only the Subaru enthusiasts will know what the market will bear. That is the beauty of Craigs list-- 5 bucks a month. That is 60 bucks for one year of advertising. Why not put it on Craig's list at a top price and let it run and see what the market will bear?
Still, I think between the rust and one significant repair item that could run in the thousands of dollars is very likely going to render this vehicle a parts car.
Who wants to be holding this thing when the merry-go-round stops? All the posters here aren't going to be holding the bag on a swell car that may well not be economically feasible to fix.
It doesn't matter who is going to buy it and what they are going to do with it-- the seller is entitled to know and receive full market value, whatever it is, and holding onto it for the sentimental value of the posters here is not going to necessarily align with the owner's interests.
If the owner does not possess the appreciation for it coupled with a realistic prospect of being able to repair it him or herself, it still seems to me to throw it up on Craig's list for a year or so and see what the market will bear. Only then will a meaningful and informed decision be able to be made. At some price, everyone should sell shouldn't they? What is the market value that an informed Subaru enthusiast will actually pay? Craigs list will tell you that answer, in my view, and that is what is missing for me from this picture. What do you have to lose, 5 bucks a month?
