Technically Subaru HP ATF is specified. If you are doing a drain and fill and it has never been done. Dex/Mercon will sufice although not as good as the HP. Check the full specs on the back.

Subaru says what they recommend, but of course there are many other brands that will work as good or better. Most forum members go with Subaru brand ATF.

We have Red Line synthetic ATF in both our Foresters, this was an "upgrade" at our trusted local Subaru dealership. This ATF is VERY expensive, so you don't want to use it for a "drain & refill" regiment. :icon_eek:

Bottom line. If you need to get the ATF locally, get a known brand that states it will work in your specific, model year transmission.
