As you may of gathered by the amount of posts I've started I've recently picked up a fresh import 2005 face-lift forester STi.

Ive had the car a few weeks now so assume its been sat for a while and on the test drive it was fine and now it's in use everyday any possible issues will be coming to light which I guess is to be expected.

I've started to get a whine coming from what seems to be the top right of the engine. The noises is very prominent when cold and increases in tempo when the accelerator pedal is pressed. It quietens down after about 5 to 10 minutes when the car is getting up to temperature however it is still there if you listen out for it but it is at this point only a subtle noise. It doesn't change if the steering wheel is moved its more related to the pedal as mentioned

I have taken a couple of video clips in the hope it may give you an indication of what it may be but I'm struggling to upload them.

Any idea how to load the mp4 and what the issue may be. Spoken with the importers and they've asked me to get it to a garage as get it diagnosed so I've reached out to a couple who are local ish to me but the issue is by the time I've driven the half hour to them the noise would have quietened up. So any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

^ Yes, that would be my first guess. Easy to tell, just grab a long screwdriver and place the tip on the pump then put your ear to the handle.

If not the pump then maybe an alternator bearing on the way out.

I've never had a turbo go bad but could it make a spinning bearing sound like that as well?

It is something attached to an accessory belt or the timing belt. It is related directly to engine RPM, not throttle position. Turbo speed varies with a bunch of factors, it doesn't stick exactly with engine RPM like this noise.

Screwdriver trick above is a good one. Test components until you find it.

+1 for power steering pump.

....but why ever did someone move this thread to European forum? Does it not occur in other countries??

My '03 N/A Forester that I recently purchased has a bit of a whine too. Hopefully just power steering pump and not timing gears. I can rule out alternator and drive belts as I just replaced those.

I have a 09 Honda CR-V that had a similar noise. It was the power steering pump. There was a defective o ring that was causing air to get in the system and causing the whine. It would only happen when the engine is cold. Once it got up to temperature the noise went away.

Digging up an old thread but... did you ever found what it was? My 2004 Cross Sports does the exact same sound after a cold night (below freezing point) out. It goes away when the engine is hot.

Morning fella, yes did get to the bottom of it. Power steering pump as suggested by some forum members. Seems to be a subaru thing, I had a P1 years before and that pump failed as well.

Wow, thanks a lot Stevie for taking the time to reply to a two years old thread. I'm having the car checked at the mechanic tomorrow for something else, I'll have the steering pump checked as well then.

Yup, mine is busted too. That sucks, but oh well. Timing belt is due for this year so I’m gonna have it done at the same time to save a bit on the labour time.

Attached is a video of the noise if anyone is interested. Cold start after a night below freezing temperatures.
