2005 SG9 STI - sorting out the fuel smell, what else to replace?

2951 Views 17 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  bobk25
So ive decided im going to sort out the 'leaking' fuel pipe smell (we all know what this is), so with the inlet manifold being off, is there anything else you'd change or sort out, car in question is a SG9 STI

Im thinking of getting the PCV valve cleaned out,
Fuel Lines
Fuel Pressure Regulator

Anything else?

replace the pcv.......... dont just clean it, the ones with internal springs may not work ,simply because they rattle when shaken doesnt mean that they are not internally corroded,............... it is a cheap but vital part per fuel to accelerate efficiently. and to reduce internal engine pressure ;................ and removal to clean or replace is same amount of work with new ones are sometimes updated construction to be more efficient and durable .............. new cars with GDI should consider an oil vapor catch can or a true oil separator if they dont want to clean the system out every 1 to 2 years,
Does anyone know if the JDM and UKDM lines are the same part number as my garage has sent me a pic asking if thats correct yet a pic ive found online (possibly on here), would suggest different number...

Thanks
The FSTI inlet manifold fuel lines/hoses appear to be similar to the pre MY06 UKDM XT's 205 and 255 being the same
apart from Subaru Uk, does anyone know where i can get the fuel pipes from as google isnt throwing up anything UK based, nor is ebay

If you know what you are looking for and have the part numbers then Partsouq is a good option or Genuine Parts GmbH, if you want to buy from Europe (prices quoted include VAT just shipping extra until Brexit ).

As mentioned before all FSTI inlet manifold fuel pipework is the same as MY05 UK 2.5 FXT
just some of the usual part numbers below

Out of interest, you do know that all FSTI's are SG9's? They all have the 2.5L engine which is designated by the number 9. (5 for the 2.0L).
What's more important for getting correct information is the "revision" letter (C - F) which is the 4th character of the applied model code eg: SG9C5EH
How would i find that out for a STI '05?

im guessing itll be on the VIN?

(yes ive been drinking)
It's all on the VIN plate

In theory a 2005 "built" FSTI could be a revision C,D or E as the builds have a production overlap.

Thanks for the heads up on the websites, partsouk is abit confusing to start with as you need the VIN number first. Though they dont have some of the pipes in stock.

but the German one is useless as it wont go to their shop. Plus ive been ripped off of late by a German parts company on an AC pump.

I did find a UK supplier online but they wanted £8 per pipe but i cant find them now. My garage is going to speak to Subaru as well/

Do i have to go with these pipes or could i get some universal braided fuel lines and have them cut to length?
Never had a problem with Genuine Parts GmbH
Just search using the part numbers

Same with Partsouq, as long as you have the part numbers no VIN required.

Basically you can do what you like it's up to you.
Only way i could get partsouq to work for me was to put the VIN from above into it which then took me to a different section. Upon which i would need to choose what area i needed parts for - then went to a schematic/diagram where you would then click on the part and another window would pop up saying stock qty/price

Genuine Parts search appears to be broken for me, as searching via part number or vin or even just the word Subaru yields 0 results

Not sure what you are doing or your ISP must be very limiting

Depending upon what you actually want to order you may not make the minimum order value but at least it gives you an idea of the prices with the 19% VAT included.

Partsouq ??

No idea tbh on why i cant access genuine parts and i can only access partsouq via a vin but there you go. Maybe its stored your VIN in the past or something?

Anyway. looks like the pipes are on order from Subaru UK (have them in stock) and their coming back to me on the Fuel Regulator no. though its being suggested on a 2-3 week delivery as coming from Japan?!

My next question would be regarding the PCV valve, on a FL STI, what is the correct part number does anyone know?

Did you even look at the posted image?

Bit of an update and maybe help others in the future,

So the garage replaced the fuel pipes and Fuel Pressure Regulator (+ the pcv valve), took them longer than anticipated as not really scooby people  but anyway, all changed, put back together but the engine wouldnt fire up. Turns out that 2 lines/pipes had been installed wrong so quick change over and it fired up.

However, with one monkey checking over the engine bay and another turning the key, engine monkey noticed that one of the pipes to the fuel filter kept spraying fuel from a small pinhole. It was fairly indiscriminate in what it covered so the battery got a spray, the engine got a spray etc.

If your wondering why didnt i check or notice this - someone in the past fitted braided fuel lines and the pin hole was just before the male end of the filter so i wouldnt have been able to seen it by myself. So kinda grateful the monkeys screwed up putting it together and noticed the issue.

Kinda annoyed that that was possibly the reason why i could smell the fuel but at the same time, it seems to be a fairly common issue with the scooby engines, plus the PCV valve was changed, which is recommended at around 100k (mines on 116k) but never mind.

Also, funny how cars seem to pull better after being worked on or having something replaced

So true. I know it makes no technical sense but i;m always convinced it drivers better after something as simple as an oil change.
Hell, even driving it after giving it a good wash it seems to perk up!
Glad you got it sorted.
