My 05 forester is burning oil at an alarming rate. Im assuming it is the piston rings, but is there any way that I could test for sure? would a compression test do me any good or would I just be wasting my time?i burns aprox. 1 quart per week

Did this develop suddenly or increas over time? Compression test/leakdown test plus a vacuum gauge can help you diagnose this if you know how to use them, but might want to check PCV valve and for leaks too.

I was ble to check the PCV valve and it does look a bit gunked up. im going to change3 that first and see if that resolves it. other than that it sounds like an engine rebuild😥
