I have an 03 Forester X 5 speed with about 66k miles.

The car has been moderately reliable - I've replaced the catalytic convertor (under warranty) and had the standard head gasket problem (which Subaru agreed to replace out of warranty).

In the last 4 months or so I've noticed what I can best describe as a hollow metallic sounding rattle or buzz - especially when the RPMs are high (the sound is noticeable at the top of gears 1 - 4). There doesn't seem to be any correlation between the weather and the problem - but the rattle is worse when the engine is cold. I can't isolate exactly where the sound is coming from.

Any ideas? The problem was noticeable both before and after the head-gasket replacement, so I doubt it's related to that problem/repair.

most likely an exhaust heat shield. I have the same condition at various rpm's there is one that rattles very near the point where the two headers meet
