I have external leaking oil and coolant coming from the head-gasket areas. There does not appear to be any internal leaking although I could be wrong. The EJ25 has 200k+. No overheating but it drinks (or leaks) coolant like I drink beer. I've browsed through the forum posts about head-gasket repair and the posts are conflicted and dated at best IMHO unless I am missing a recent post somehow.

What I am seeking is a comprehensive list of belts, pulleys, pumps, gaskets that are recommended to replace perhaps with asterisks next to essential parts. Obviously, budget is a concern. However, I intend to keep the LAWD for at least another 100 - 200 k if I can. I have repaired almost everything else with the vehicle including DIY body and paint job, and I am currently rebuilding the suspension. The head-gasket issue is on deck before returning the vehicle to the road.

Any advice, thoughts, updated links to kits you would purchase, etc are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I have a 2001 Forester S. At around 120,000 miles the dealer replaced the HG, I doubt they did a good job, as it started leaking again around 180,000 miles. I kept driving it until 212,000 miles and had a Subaru specialist replace the HG again. But he used Turbo HG instead of the N/A Head Gasket. The vehicle now has 221,000 miles on it.

When it was leaking around 180,000 miles, it was leaking both oil and coolant. It was not burning either. But definitely leaking as I could see it underneath the engine. I was losing about 1L every 2500-3000 miles and coolant I was refilling the overflow bottle every 3 to 6 months(5000 miles).

I expect to get another 100,000+ miles going forward. I also had the timing belt/water pump done at the same time.

Thank you for sharing your experience with your head gasket repair!

Would this be a 2002 Forester Turbo OEM HG that was used the second time?

@randalle4, Yes they did use 2002 Forester Turbo OEM HG for the 2nd repair. I should add they also send the heads off for a complete rebuild as well, as the valve stem seals were leaking. So they resurfaces/refinished the mating surface of the heads. I doubt the dealer did this the first time around.
