Depending how much stuff you want to add. If you have front/rear metal bumpers in mind,winch, overlanding gear then go with XT. There is no substitute for the extra HP. For something mild like skid plates, roof rack with LED and shovel holder, lift kit you'll be OK with the 2.5X . Engine more reliable and works even on the donkey piss if good gas not available.
I think it is more of auto vs manual. I have a 2.5 FXT manual, and while nice for back road driving, when you get to offroading (even just fire roads) it can be a pain to crawl up something. I feel bad for my clutch since you can really be in 1st gear and go below 5 mph and have any torque. Auto would be much easier to traverse. So I say def auto, and if you want so more power, go turbo.
