Could any one recommend when is the best time to do the 1st oil change on a new 2019 Forester? I plan on doing it myself as I did with my previous Crosstrek.

I did mine at 750 km.
My car was built in Sept of 2017, delivered to the dealer mid November, had 125 km on it when I bought it mid June of 2018, so it sat over winter with very little use.
The oil was already looking dirty at 750km, so I changed it out and installed an EZ Drain at the same time.
That EZ Drain is a great accessory, much like the Fumoto.
I have used Fumoto's before, but I'd rate the EZ Drain better.

The oil is supposed to suspend all the contaminants and when it does that it starts to look black. The oil turning black is a sign that the oil is doing its job. If the oil doesn't contain all the contaminants then all that stuff is stuck all over your engine parts, where you don't want it. Here's kind of a computer-graphicky diagram of how the contaminants are suspended using oil additives:

If you change your oil and see that it is a pristine golden colour, like from my wife's 2017 RX350, then you start to worry and wonder whether the crud is stuck all over the engine, or hopefully on some magnet in the engine somewhere. When I did the first oil change in my car, at 10,1xx km, it was black, and I was happy.

Here's what synthetic oil looks like at the change interval, and you can see that it is still protecting the engine. Conventional oil is more likely to offer much less protection when it's time to change the oil.

I am not claiming scientific accuracy, and I do oil analysis on my vehicles.
I have always noticed that when oil gets dirty early on its a sign that the rings are allowing more dirt in and the vehicle uses more oil.

My '18 XT was changed at 3500 miles and the oil was very clean looking and did not use il that I could notice.

I like my Pela 6000 oil extractor. No reason to get under the car at all. Cost about $50 and well worth the cost. I use it on my lawn mower, generator, power washer and all of my cars. Had mine since 2009 and highly recommend.

Smoother on/off operation, harder chromed surface than Fumoto brass, and neoprene O-ring instead of composite gasket.
And it has at least double the volume when draining than the Fumoto.
Thanks bigbird1. One other question...Does the EZ Drain have a plastic clip to ensure the lever stays in the closed position like the Fomoto valve has?

Why do factories print owners manuals?
After reading most of my 2018 owners manual, I would say they print them to protect themselves from lawsuits. I find reading it very cumbersome with all the bold typed, common sense warnings and repetition. But I get your point :)

The lever has a plastic cover over its end, but more importantly IMHO the lever must be pulled down before it can be rotated.
With the Subaru's plastic sump cover, there is no way that I could ever see the lever being opened unintentionally.
And to provide even more assurance, EZ Drain sells an aluminum cap that screws into the drain port to prevent oil leakage if somehow the lever got opened.

Thanks you all for the great posts. I did get the Fumoto 108 drain valve. Debating whether to change it on schedule or doing it earlier as one post suggested.
