I am an experienced engineer but love these forums as its not worth reinventing the wheel if its been done or found before!

My forester seems difficult to get in second and low range. All other gears are absolutely fine. I bought a service manual but its rubbish as it covers more EJ22/25 than EJ20.

I'm thinking of dropping the box but would like a diagram really, can anyone help with diagrams or probable cause?

All vehicles are more difficult to get into 1st and 2nd especially when moving. Your synchronizer could be shot or you are moving too much when engaging. Perhaps you are moving too fast when engaging. You shouldn't be moving at all to engage 1st.

Do you normally put it in say 3rd and then go right to 2nd/1st?

I do change smoothly through the gears and its more of an issue changing from 1st to 2nd. I quite often go from 1st to 3rd and there's no issue.

The thing is I am unsure how this relates to the low range shifting or could this be a separate issue?

I really need a blow up diagram of the transmission so I can strip and inspect.
