Looking into keeping this '06 X Premium running a while.

Issues with car...

Throws the P0027/8 code(the one for timing advance, if I recall) every once in a while.
Currently has a P0420 that you clear...comes back in 2-3 days.
Timing Belt/water pump done at the dealer(was there for the fuel pump recall anyway) 18 months and 40,000 miles ago.
Changed radiator cause it was leaking across the top.
Now, the front of the motor steams up with a "not always" burnt smell to the antifreeze(could be simply a leaky WP or the head gasket gone)
The muffler has a minute hole, needs replaced/welded up anyway.

Question...
If I do "all of this right" (assuming the worst...needs everything...possible)...once.

Anybody got a clue on how much at a typical non-dealer shop? (keeping in mind, would be willing to "over due it" so there won't be problems for the next 100k)

Yeah the P0028. Valve lift.

For some reason I thought it had a Bank 2 and Bank 1 variant??? (maybe?)

I believe the P0028(and if is shares one) is caused by 1qt of oil being burned every 1000-ish miles. Car gets driven daily on drives of half hour or less...but common to drive a total of 150 miles, as 5-8 trips.

The owner(my cousin) doesn't understand preventative maintenance. He'd rather wait till it leaves him stranded to fix it. But, "luckily", since it is winter...not a good idea to get stranded(he understands that philosophy).

Anyway...assuming the valve seals/rings are causing the P0028.
Assuming the "worst"...head gasket.
Assuming the cat is "bad anyway" at 145,000.

Any idea?

By the way...

The corporation he owns/works for buys a new car(up to $100,000*) for the 8 corp owners every two years...if they want one.

Cash is not a problem. Desire to put money into it is...as in if he wants to pile money into the car for it to go another X miles...or just trade it for another car. The corporation is paying this, just like it does for anything on the '10(now that it is out of warranty. The bene's of corporate ownership)

They(the corp) bought the 2010 Forester(which the wife drives) late when the '11 came out. He's "due" for another car...if he wants one.

*He's not into the "flash and glitz" like some of the partners. The most "new car" he'd get would be another Forester or a Nissan Rogue...etc...

My only thought is to avoid a private shop unless they are recognized as a good Subaru specialist. Also it sounds like the 4 idlers, and tensioner have not been replaced. That needs to happen.

When the dealer did the TB, I required that "if you touch it, replace it". As they didn't want to replace the WP. So the bill shows all the idlers(itemized) and WP.

When I asked about the WP possibly leaking last month(started steaming and thought just the radiator would solve it...it was leaking) and they said "over 12 months ago, not our problem".(that is exactly what they said...)

When I changed the radiator(myself with one from Advance) the one coming out was beat up like some beat-nik banged up against it doing the TB/WP job. Seriously it had marks in it running in perfect circles around where they were taking bolts/nuts out.
