I was just informed that the 03 X I just bought from a private seller burns a quart of oil every 600-700 miles. She said it has always been that way.

Never heard of such a thing. Seems to run well and no drips beneath. I'm have the engine compartment cleaned tomorrow so I can better see any leaks.

Ideas? Is oil burning a typical issue for Foresters?

1 quart every 3,000 miles is the limit for "normal" consumption according to subaru. If its really burning that much before 1,000 miles then something is wrong.

Our '02 burns around a quart per thousand. I'm not happy with it doing so, but there is no cheap fix for it. Our '96 2.2 Impreza used virtually no oil until it passed beyond the 150,000 mile threshold. I read somewhere the theory of 'sticky rings' in Subarus but I'm not sure I buy that.
