  1. ('14-'18) What are your real world miles per gallon?

    Fuel Economy and Alternative Fuels
I took my '16 XT on a 774 km drive, including 87 km of gravel. Speeds for about 250 kms were up to 130 kph, with the rest at mostly 105 on cruise, except the gravle was about 55. As I filled three times, I had to hand calculate the fuel use and it worked out to 8.0 liters per 100 kms, or 29.4...
  2. Recent Used CRV or Forester ?

    Forester Shopping
Not at all, I am just going by what the OP stated: If they wish to broaden their selection to '15s and '16's that is fine, but also at that price, at least here in Canada where the OP is from, you will be able to get a new Crosstrek or HRV for the price of a used late model CR-V or Forester as...
  3. Recent Used CRV or Forester ?

    Forester Shopping
One thing people seem to be forgetting is that the OP is looking at USED CR-V's, not new (nor new Forester). So pulling up comparisons of 2015/2016 models is not relevant. My wife did not like my '09, (but is fine with the redesigned XT). Her mom had a CR-V in the age range the OP is looking...
  4. The CVT: Learn it and Love it

    Transmission and Driveline
Some great info here. Like a lot of people, this is my first CVT and it is taking some getting used to. The concepts that are described in the first post make the behavior of my XT make sense. For example, I had to come to a dead stop on the highway yesterday when a bunch of Darwin Award...
  5. Silly Question About Brake Lights and EyeSight

    Driver-Assist Technology and EyeSight
Hopefully not too silly: when the system retards the motion of the vehicle (with collision avoidance or the adaptive cruise control) do the brake lights come on? If using the cruise, when it does whatever it does (brakes?) to keep the vehicle at the set speed going downhill, do the lights come...
  6. To all the haters who said this couldn't be done

    Towing and Hauling
I was close, but I was not sure what the trailer limit was. Used the rule of thumb 10% thing on a 1,500 lbs estimate. Still probably over.
  7. To all the haters who said this couldn't be done

    Towing and Hauling
Not legal here for sure; the license plate is not visible, and if those red lights at the corners are only reflectors then not legal at night either. The more I look at this, the more wow. I doubt those tie downs would hold our canoe let alone a bike. As noted, can be done but should not be...
  8. ('14-'18) Auto door lock or all door open options?

    Interior and Electronics
My wife's 2012 RAV does not auto-lock, unlike the 2004 Sienna she had before. A feature some like and some don't. Me, no. First thing I did with mine was figure this out and get it programmed for unlocking all the doors at once. Not exactly high risk areas I drive in; and when I do it is an...
  9. Tire Snowflake Symbol?

    Wheels and Tires
Some very interesting discussions here, good info coming out. Wish I could find more independent reviews of the Toyo and WRG3. I am hesitant on the WRG3 as I had the 2s last few years and was not impressed with their wet abilities. Never tried them in snow as I was running dedicated snowies...
  10. ('09-'13) Help!!! Broken cv axle in the Eastern Sierras

    Transmission and Driveline
Actually, you plug in fuse to get front wheel drive. It is what you are supposed to do if you have a flat and need to use the space saver spare. I have never heard of a way to enable RWD only, just FWD.
  11. ('09-'13) Help!!! Broken cv axle in the Eastern Sierras

    Transmission and Driveline
Hmm, this doesn't sound good. Not sure about the XT/4EAT combo, but I believe in other combination it is easy for someone not familiar with Subaru's or not paying attention to fill the front diff instead of the AT (and visa versa). I would get your AT and front diff fluids checked out as soon...
  12. ('14-'18) Check or replace?

    Problems, Maintenance, and Warranty
My '16 came with a separate paper book for documenting the required maintenance. The schedules are described in detail (A, B etc, inspect, replace etc) at the bottom, while the table is checked off for what/when/who did it. Same as my '09 but a bit different than other manufactures for sure.
  13. ('14-'18) Factory Nav maps update

    Interior and Electronics
FYI, my '16 has a built date of 02/16 (delivered Easter weekend) and the maps are all Q3 2014. Pretty out of date and I will be talking with my dealer.
  14. 93 versus 91 or 89 octane with a turbo...

    Fuel Economy and Alternative Fuels
I don't have 93 as an option either, so I have been using 91 with no booster stuff. Have hit 19 psi of boost, and am getting about 10% better fuel consumption than my previous '09 non turbo Forester after 5,000 kms. So I would say 91 should be fine as long as you use good quality fuel.
  15. ('14-'18) HELP!! - Rusting Issue with my white 2015 Forester XT

    Exterior and Body
avy88, first welcome to the forum. It is too bad it took an issue like this to get you to post. There has been lots of good advice above, so I would heed it: Contact Subaru USA and open a case; However, I would not recommend that you do anything to the Forester yourself or through a third...
  16. 2011 Subaru Forester Gulping Gas

    Fuel Economy and Alternative Fuels
First of all, you need to actually do the math as the fuel gauge may not be that accurate. My '09 when it showed 1/2 a tank it was really only about 40% down. Assuming that the 125 miles on 1/2 tank is accurate, that to me equates to about 400 kms per tank. Based on my experiences with my '09...
  17. Subaru approved cable chains for 2016 Forester?

    Wheels and Tires
Thanks kissel for letting me know what is required down south. So as that is what is needed, I can't offer any advice, sorry, but it looks like lots of good options being suggested by others.
  18. Subaru approved cable chains for 2016 Forester?

    Wheels and Tires
Is it a legal requirement to have chains in WA? I live across the border to the north and drove many time through the Canadian Cascades with good quality snow tires with no issues, would this be a better option? Or even allowed? When I got my '09 I too looked for chains as I had them on all...
  19. What did you do to your subie today?

    General Forum
Took the beast on its first "real" drive, to the Woss Lookout trailhead parking lot. Here is the Google image of the road, the red thing is the upper parking lot. It is much steeper than it looks. In the above photo, just to the right of the Forester you can see the lower switchback peeking...
  20. 3000 mile difference

    General Forum
Although it is much too early for the XT (it only has 1,300 kms) I can confirm I had a noticeable, and documented through my daily log books, improvement in fuel consumption with my '09. But it was not at 3,000 or 5,000 or even 10,000. It was at 100,000 kms pretty much on the button. Fuel...
