Flashing CEL means the car went into limp mode. How old is your timing belt? I suppose it's possible that it jumped a tooth when you redlined it.

I think that's a source of rattles on all Forester generations... I put foam tape between the trim and body on the liftgate of my SG, it helped mitigate the problem somewhat.

I just don't understand the confusion with the plugs (engine oil vs. transmission)... once you're past the front axles it's pretty much guaranteed you're not looking at an oil drain plug. :shrug:
