chong Friday night I had finished getting the car ready to leave for a ski trip early Saturday morning when things started failing. First the radio cut out, next the ABS light lit up on the cluster, then the brake light, then the cluster got really dim, followed by the cluster ceasing to work entirely. Luckily, I was only about 3/4 miles from home so I ditched it in a parking lot and walked home. I suspected the alternator, but not wanting to swap it in a random parking lot I yanked the battery out of my WRX (which has been up on jack stands since about Thanksgiving) and headed back to where I left the Forester. Swapped the battery, jumped the car from the wife's Impreza and started home. I made it about 50 feet before the entire car just shut off. Managed to coast into the next parking lot. That was at 8:30pm. Plan was to leave for the ski trip at 4am the next morning. Had the wife race to Autozone to pick up a new alternator. Swapped it into the Forester and got the old alternator back to Autozone before they closed at 10. Glad Subaru puts the alternator in a convenient place! Jumped the car again and drove it home, shut it off to put the battery tie downs back on, and tried to fire it back up with no luck. Let it sit all day yesterday (ended up taking the wife's car skiing) and put the battery on the charger all night. Swapped it in this morning and it fired up. I let it run for about an hour and everything seems ok now. We're going to drive it about an hour across Detroit today to see the wife's grandma. Hopefully everything is good. I'm not terribly confident that I didn't ruin the battery running it so low so we'll see.

I'm about 3.5 weeks out from my trip to Jackson Hole. I need the Forester to make the trip. I will be absolutely miserable if I have to drive the WRX all the way out there!

I never see my lighted taillights so I don't care if they are or aren't appealing. I do care that those who could potentially hit me from behind see my taillights. I would never disable nor diminish any light that lets following cars know I'm there. That lower light might make the difference between being seen or not seen in adverse conditions (heavy rain, fog, etc). And if you get rear-ended and the other driver can show that you disabled lights that could end badly for you.

mike_n Why would you disable part of the taillights? Is that even legal?

LED'd my eyebrows. Worthless in the day, pretty cool in the dusk

86'd my snorkus. Not sure what I think yet, it pretty much just makes a wind noise all the time now.

Hamel Replaced the Line Pressure and 2-4 Brake Timing solenoids in the transmission. It didn't fix the problem so back under I go tomorrow to replace the 2-4 Brake Duty solenoid and hit the rest with 12v to make sure they're working.

Also pulled the timing belt and cover trying to hunt down an oil leak. After deciding it's probably the oil pump seal I put everything back and am taking her to a shop.
