It's my understanding that ANY modification of the OEM headlight is technically illegal, that being said there are still right and wrong ways to do it. What type of bulb is in your wife's headlights right now? If they are halogen, either a good bulb or modifying another halogen bulb that was more output is a good option. The light pattern should still be the same, so you won't be scattering light everywhere - but should help illuminate the areas further. If they are HID then perhaps a good quality HID bulb could help some more, you are also somewhat limited by the optics of the housing you already have, not all are created equal. The best outputs I've personally seen are from HID retrofits from someplace such as www.theretrofitsource.com, but that may run you a little more money and be a bit more work to modify. The BIGGEST thing to remember is NEVER stick a bulb into a housing it was not designed for, not all reflectors are the same and not all projectors are the same.
