How's Cobb's TBE noise level (from the cockpit)? And do you think you could have gain a bit more with Ecutek instead of the AP? I'm trying to decide between the two...

PS
How is your experience with Gruppe-S? Any complaints?

Nice sounding exhaust. Slight freeway drone but not louder than the wind noise.
AP > ecutek. AP has maps, protune, street tuner, boost display and can read/reset error codes. Best bang for your dollar.
Gruppe-S is great. Mike knows how to do a good tune.

Thanks for the input.

I'm going to drop by and pick up a couple of stuff from them this coming week. Good to hear they're solid folks to deal with.

What is your opinion on COBB OTS STG2 vs. STG2 Protune? Am I reading your Dyno graph wrong? Are those numbers a bit low? 214/223 whp/wtq? For STG2 Protune? Curious....

The numbers are meaningless for comparisons to other vehicles, they are best used as markers for the vehicle itself for monitoring how modifications are effecting the performance.
There are too many variables at play to compare one dyno plot to another, the only exclusion would be 2 cars dynoed back to back on the same dyno, with simular temp, humidity, etc.

I am curious as to an accurate drivetrain loss index for our Subarus. With 214 HP at the wheels, what is the HP at the crank?

Gruppe S has a an extremely stingy dyno. Even for a Mustang it's very conservative.

Point taken Mr. Soze and that would make more sense Eclipse.

Keyser Soze and GatorXT-
If you compare the numbers to COBB's liberal dyno, mine seem low.

A stock STi on the Gruppe-S dyno puts down around 225, so I'm happy with the peak numbers...But the real story is how much area I have under the curve. Power delivery is SO much smoother on the Protune map compared to the shelf stage-2 map. The power is more usable (for lack of a better way to word it).

Wraith-
Moose will kick a$$ in the twisties but I am not the best on the street. I have more confidence around cones...

Mike at Gruppe-S did a great job giving me a great tune that really shines at the auto-x.

Post Update March 26, 2006

Installed Whiteline ALK "sport"
Replaced COBB front sway bar with the stock bar and bushings for auto-x'ing to reduce push.

The ALK and softer front bar gives me so much more grip in front! Power can be applied much sooner and more aggressively in the turns. There is a bit more front body roll but that is to be expected from the stock front bar.

NVH is up but only noticeable when driving over small bumps or lane "dots." The front goes "bam" and rear does not.

The main reason why I chose to replace the control arm aft bushings with an ALK is because I felt that the this was cause of a left pull during hard acceleration; I had hoped the stiffer ALK bushing would correct it. So far, it seems to have worked, but won't be 100% sure until Moose gets another alignment.

On the drawing board:
Trailing Links and DBA front rotors...

Update the first post to reflect current parts/mods.

Installed a VF-39 and STi TMIC because I thought my TD04 was the reason the engine was drinking oil. Currently running the COBB OTS VF-39 map.

Updated the OP with new parts:
  • GST Shortblock (JE 100mm forged, Cosworth bearings, balanced, blueprinted)
  • Cosworth HP oil pump
  • ARP bolts
  • Titek UP
  • Walbro 255 liter/hour fuel pump
  • Group N engine mounts
  • Samco radiator hoses
  • ACT HD pressure plate, SM disc
  • ACT Streetlite flywheel
  • 235/45/17 Falken 912
I'll post the dyno plots after the tune; the short block is still going through the break-in.

The 18G died.
Installed the VF-41.
Very happy with it! Plot looks very similar to the 18G plot, but slightly higher. It is so much more fun to drive than 18G ever was.

Link to my thread about the VF-41 install and dead 18G
