Will not shift from 1st to 2nd. All other gears work fine. Had transmission fluid changed and this problem happened. Will not go into go into 2nd at all, clutch in or out no grinding, just will not go. Any advice?
Will not go into with clutch in or out. Engine running or not,no grinding Just will not go into 2nd gear. Just had trans fluid changed and this happened. Any soulitions
Sorry, I missed that. Red Line 75W90NS is fine, but should be called gear oil not fluid.
Synchronizers do not suddenly go bad.
Nor does a synchronizer suddenly block a transmission from going into a gear.
We need some more backstory.
Why did you have the gear oil changed - was there already a hint of some problem?
Who are "they"?
Did they notice the shifting problem?
If so, what do they say.
If not, how long before you noticed it?
So will the gear lever not move into second, correct?
Can you feather the clutch while you are trying to move it into second?
If you try to move the lever into second without the clutch, will it grind?
Thanks for your replies. It starts working for awhile than doesn't work. It seems when I go hard it will not go into 2nd. I brought my own fluid so it is correct. The gear lever will not into 2nd clutch in or out no grinding because it will not budge no matter what. The transmission has been about 35k ago no synchros where replaced. I think that I might have to get a used one instead of rebuilding again.
It happened about 3monthes ago . Just went away but felt a little rough shifting from 1st to second. So I just decided to have the transmission fluid changed,Buy the local shop. I called Redline and they the 75W90NS would help the synchros work better. I brought it to the local shop and changed fluid and on the way home I stopped at a light and it would not go into 2nd gear. So drove back to the shop and they took it out for a test drive and it did not shift into 2nd . They could not know what the problem was said it had to be taken apart. The problem seems to come and go. If I accelerate hard from 1st to second this seems to trigger the problem. It shifts fine in all other gears. Not sure what do?
So the problem was already there.Your statement "Will not go into go into 2nd at all, clutch in or out no grinding, just will not go" does not sound like a synchronizer problem, but could be a linkage problem.
But what is the history of this 2006 Forester? How many miles on it? Have you owned it since new, or did you buy it used? If used, the previous owner could have damaged the transmission linkage or internals.
I am the only owner bought it new. It has 156K .Engine been rebuilt and transmission has been rebuilt twice 1st time replaced three reduction gear bearing in the rear of the transmission. 2nd replaced trans viscos coupler. What is the linkage you are talking about? Were is it located? It seems to be working now, not sure why? Thanks for your advice.
Others know more than me on this. The linkage is the lever, rods and bushings between your hand and the transmission. Out of adjustment or damaged linkage can prevent gear engagement.
But shift linkage does not go in and out of adjustment, so it's still a mystery.
