I have a 2004 Forester with 55.000 miles. The last few weeks I've been hearing a high pitched whining noise when I back out of my garage. When I put it in drive it goes away. It seems to have gotten louder in the last few days. I'm hoping it isn't the Transmission. Anyone ever experience this with their Subaru?
Every vehicle I've ever owned whines in reverse. It's just power running through more gears. It would make sense to get louder in the winter months as well as your ATF is thicker in the cold weather.
UNLESS you are noticing something beyond the typical reverse gear whine. Is is more of a squealing or screeching?
Reverse gears are generally straight cut if I remember anything, which tend to whine and be way noisier. But I think that is only on Manual Subaru's....
At 55,000 Miles, it might be a good time to drain and refill the transmission with some new Automatic transmission fluid (ATF).
