Default Which Vendor do you use for gear oil?

Ok,

I am about to purchase my motul 300 gear oil and redline light weight shock proof gear oil (smurfs blood).

Which shop do you buy it at?

Who has the best price.

I am about to use some vendor on Amazon. Does anyone recommend a specific vendor? Obviously wanting the best price.

Thanks.

Im also curious about this, although I dont know if naming a vendor violates forum rules.

Ive been wanting to change my front and rear diff oil for a while, but cant find any suitable gear oils available locally. Even my Sub dealership only sells the Subaru Extra S gear oil in 5 gallon drums (would have a TON of extra oil left over!).

For the rear you can use any good synthetic 75W-90 GL5 gear oil. I've used M1, Valvoline Synpower, and Redline in the rear. You can get these at the local car parts store.

It's the FRONT which is ultra critical since it's the tranny's oil as well. Nobody in my area carries the Shockproof oils, so I mail order it from Summit Racing. There are small time independent garage dealers for the Motul or for the Neo of you prefer that.

Does synthetic gear oil have a shelf life? If I buy a 5 gallon drum, could I make that last for a couple of drain and fills of MT fluid, assuming I seal it tight, store it in the basement, etc..?

^iirc, all unused oils are pretty much indefinite shelf life as long as it isn't tainted with something else.

RP has built in LS friction modifiers. That's the last thing you want on your tranny synchros.

RL Lightweight Shockproof is what's happening.

Iron Pony in Columbus and Competition Accessories in Springfield caries them. Both are mail order motorcycle parts vendor.
Jegs and Summit racing sells Redline. If you live pretty far from those store its easier to just get it online.

Tremo, have you ever drained your front differential fluid and seen red?

Whenever I change the front differential oil it is gold in color. Isn't tranny fluid red?

On the 4eat you have the front diff on one side and the tranny fill on the other. ATF=red, gear oil is goldish (although some are different, but you can tell by the viscosity, atf is watery)

Are you sure you drained the front diff and not the auto tranny? ATF is indeed red. Gear oil is golden brown.

Ouch, if someone filled the front diff with ATF. I think ATF is a GL4 oil and that will not make the hypoid very happy. The hypoid wants GL5.

Do you have a 4EAT or 5MT? I've drained both, my Outback has 5MT and the wife's Foz has the 4EAT. First time I went under the Forester it was pretty obvious which drain plug was for what.
