My 04 2.5xt manual has started making a noise that sounds like diff whine from the front. Quite bad and getting worse!! Tried different fluids, red line etc no joy. Can the diff gears be replaced separately or is a new gearbox a better option at 170k miles? Do 2.0xt boxes fit 2.5s? Do I need the exact right part number in opposed forces or is there some interchangeability? And is it a complete pita to do?
opening up the gearbox can be just as costly as replacing it with one from a wrecked car depending on what is broken.
It's possible that the diff is on the way out, but it could also be one of the bearings on the main shaft that has called it quits. This isn't uncommon, and its location could be at any end of the transmission since there are a number of bearings along the main shaft.
Thanks for that, was kind of thinking so! Do you know if theres a difference between 2.0XT and 2.5XT gearboxes if i get the same model year and push/pull clutch type? Seems to be an awfull lot of very similar part numbers on opposed, surely some must fit!!
