Shift Lock Sticking

My 2000 Forester S (AT) shift lock is sticking. I was told to pull the console and push a pencil ect. in the little hole in front of the shifter. It solves the problem but it continually locks up and does not allow you to shift into drive. What's the solution? Thank!

do your brake lights work ?, have you spilled a sticky drink onto the gear selector ?...

there is a solenoid that releases the shifter from park when you step on the brakes..bad brake light switch, spilled drink or bad shift lock solenoid are the most likely cause of this issue
