I'm just wondering if it's possible to replace the entire shifter assembly from another vehicle? Mine is rusted and corroded underneath the car. If it does work, would I have to use a short shifter that's made specifically for that assembly?
This is the entire assembly that i'm talking about...
I believe any 5MT assembly that looks like that will, essentially, bolt right in. If I can do something similar with a 99 Impreza 5MT and toss it in my 98RS 4EAT body, you should be able to find any complete assembly and replace your broken one.
Just make sure you get the WHOLE thing. I remember seeing something about different width shifters on the TiC website. So, you could get another FXT shifter or find a junked RS shifter, just make sure to get the whole thing and not try and substitute parts and pieces for what you currently have.
Yes I know to get the entire assembly, but would it fit? Mine is not broken, but definitely corroded/rusted very badly. Part of the question would be, if I only replaced the piece that connects to the shifter (the one with the longbolt through it) with one off say an Impreza, would I be able to use short shifters for the Impreza? I know the width is slightly wider. And this would give me more short shifter options.
