My 99 Forester has had the 5th gear popout problem for a few years. Recently a noise has been added. The gearbox whines (like a VW bug in reverse) most of the time; sometimes loud, sometimes soft. When decelerating it is fairly loud. The whine is proportional to the road speed. It doesn't matter if the clutch is engaged or the trans is in neutral.
Is this related to the likely loose mainshaft nut that causes the 5th gear popout? Or not?
And I've ignored the popout for quite a while. Is this a problem that is likely to become a REAL problem - like the car won't move or the transmission falls apart or..?
Thanks.
