So my '04 FXT 4eat transmission **** the bed last week and I'm conflicted on how to proceed. I was under impression that the 4eat was pretty solid, but (possibly) it wasn't able to handle the powah! My setup is pretty tame: DW 850's, Walbro 255, VF48 '08 STI IC, Silicone turbo inlet, forged internals, TGV deletes, catless DP, STI exhaust, & E-Tune by Clark.
Is it worth $4,500 to have my transmission built by IPT, or should I buy a used tranny for $1,500 with (supposedly) only 26k on it? Will the stock tranny blow up again, or should it be sufficient? Any insights you have would be much appreciated!
How did your 4EAT fail? I'm almost surprised to hear that - those units are incredibly stout. Your engine mods are certainly not out of the ordinary power-wise. Unless you're planning on racing your car every weekend I think the IPT performance trans option is complete overkill - I'd just get the low mileage replacement 4EAT and call it a day.
Like I said I was under the impression that they are pretty stout as well. I don't thrash the car and have only tried brake boosting twice to see what it's like and neither time was above 2,500 rpm or for very long. The previous owner had replaced the engine and transmission about 2-3 years ago. The trans was replaced with only with 83k so it died with about 100k. I don't know for sure how fubar it is, but the front wheels turn with it in park, it grinds, shudders, and barely moves when in gear.
The failure was the result of: a right hand turn under moderate acceleration. The problem was exacerbated by my need to get through an intersection at rush hour on Friday, even though I limped it through the intersection.
I don't want to start another thread, so I hope I get a response or two. I realize this is dependent on who did the rebuild and how the used tranny was treated, but in general which would be better: a used transmission with 26K that "tested good" or a rebuilt transmission? The price difference is only $100. Used=$1500, rebuilt $1,600. The used price seems high and based on nothing more than low mileage. Other used trannys with 50 -60k are half that price.
My 4EAT was fubared, and i went with a full rebuild EVERYTHING is being replaced. I was quoted 3k (Hawaii thats reasonable) but I am getting upgraded clutches, higher stall and all that jazz. I was told having a trans cooler is KEY for it to live a long life... I could have got a used one for about 2500 shipped, but I didn't want to risk it. Not many FXT's out here so I was limited.
