Hey guys...noob here. I've searched all over the forum for a good answer to my problem but haven't found a definitive answer. Just picked up a 2002 Forester S with 164 k miles. Manual tyranny has a low pitch grinding noise coming from what seems to be the tyranny only on acceleration. Also, yesterday it started popping out of 4th gear. This only happens when i let off of the throttle. It has a brand new clutch installed last week.
Woody....thanks for the reply. I have found a bunch of threads on 5th popping out due to the loose nut but nothing explaining why 4th would do this other than maybe the input or output shaft bearings was could maybe be bad? Thank God I have a 60 day warranty on the clutch and tyranny! But I really don't know how much they will be willing to do?
I wondered also if this could be caused by worn out tranny mounts as I got underneath and they are totally intact but on the soft side. And there is a lot of play in the stick when i go from acellerating to decelerating.
i have rebuilt a 5 spd rear-drive mazda MT and a 5 spd toyota camry transaxle before.
haven't heard of 4th issues either. most MTs use a spring-loaded ball to get the "detent". i suppose it's possible the spring could be broken? could also be some other linkage-type issue since trans was taken out and reinstalled. the extra movement points to something broken or out of position.
grinding noise could be a number of things, but if it was a good shop and did a decent clutch job they should have been able to advise you if you had a bad wheel bearing or something else.
the mounts are on the soft side but probably aren't causing your issues. several vendors sell replacement "soft" bushings (softer than hard durometer for racing, but harder than stock rubber) that can improve the feel of the driveline.
oh, have you checked your oil level in the trans? unlike many cars there is a (short) dipstick with a yellow handle on the passenger side under the airbox. hopefully they didn't leave the oil out or way too low.
