Immediately after changing the oil in my 2009 Forester, I noticed the transmission would race, did not want to shift and the vehicle did not want to go more than 15-20 MPH. When i tried to go faster, a huge cloud of white smoke came from somewhere out the rear. Before the oil change, it was running fine. Is there a transmission fluid line I could have damaged somewhere near the oil filter? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to vote our newest member joined the club of people who have drained the transmission oil and proceeded to add 5 more quarts of oil to the engine.

It is the first post of many new comers.

Transmission takes Subaru ATF-HP, you can also use AMSOIL Synthetic Multi-Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid.

If you drained the transmission fluid into a clean pan, you could likely reuse it.

The dip-stick and fill tube for the transmission is located on the Drivers side about thigh level back by the firewall.
