I just replaced both the input shaft bearings in my 99 Forester (not too painful) but now after the reinstall I have noise that was likely there before the repair but is now (with my quiet tranny) very obvious.
The noise is between a rattle and a clunking (almosts seems U-joint like) coming from behind the transmission. The noise is only there when i let off the gas and coast. In gear only. I may be louder going downhill.
The rear CV joints look ok - there is no play in them. The u-joints as well look ok and do not seem to have any play. Could this be the carrier bearing? Which it seems we cannot replace?
Thanks
