Sometimes my 2011 Forester's manual transmission will not go into reverse directly. I have to put it in neutral, let the clutch out, and try reverse again (double clutch). Does anyone else have this problem? Its been this way since it was new.
My old Cherokee behaved this way after 150 K miles, but I think a new transmission should not have this problem. It is 1 year old with about 12K miles. Should I ask the dealer to look at it or is this normal for the Subaru Forester MT?
I have had this problem from day one and I wondered what the problem was. I will try going into 4th first but like lone ranger said I have learned to tolerate it.
same with mine. I've never tried the 4th gear thing...will try it next time. I've always had this problem with all my manual cars. Doesn't bother me after getting used to it from my first manual car.
The best way I've found is not by going to 4th gear and going straight to reverse.
If it doesn't go in all the way, slowly let the clutch out and it will drop right in... Works every time.
The reverse gear set is straight cut.
The other forward gears are helical and in constant mesh.
The reverse gear idler gear must be slid into psoition to engage reverse.
If the tips of teeth line up with the tips of other teeth, then the gears will baulk and not engage.
This is common with most manual gearboxes without synchromesh on reverese.
Some four wheel drive manaul gearboxes have synchro on reverse so the vehicle can be rocked out of a bog situation. Big Toyota Land Cruisers and some Nissan Patrols, etc.

Thanks everyone. I tried, and going to 4th first works well. I'll get used to it. I'm relieved to hear that there isn't something wrong with my transmission.
My old Cherokee (RIP) and Datsun 210 (RIP), went into reverse easily every time, at least until they got really old. I wonder if their transmissions were designed differently.

My guess is that the Cherokee had synchros in reverse (like was said earlier) and your Datsun was so light that it was easy to jam it into reverse without noticing
The 6 speed on the diesel SH has synchro on reverse. Presumably the SJ will too on the NA.
