Well tonight I was putting on S-Tech lowering springs and my stupid freakin' CV axle came out and so now I need a new one what's the usual longevity of these things? I hope it isn't worn prematurely worn.
What do you mean came out? It came out of the hub (not a big deal)? The boot is torn? The entire CV assembly just fell apart?
CV boots and axles can last for 200,000 miles. I've seen many boots from several manufacturers (chevy, mitsu, ford, Subaru, toyota) all have a failure about 100,000 miles on one or two axles. Quickly replaced however before damage was done to the actual CV joint.
FWIW, I've had nothing but BAD luck with ANYTHING but Subaru axles...
They sell remans for ~150, new they are over 300...
After swapping out 5 in the last 2yrs, and soon to be 8, when I take the last 3 POS axles out of my car, I'll be installing Subaru remans... (yes, the problem is ongoing)
One of my aftermarket axles went 30mi and pissed grease...
i'm not sure what the deal is with the axles on subarus. i've replaced several over the years i had the 2000s and now the 2004. each time i wound up going by several parts stores (like napa, car quest, advance, and autozone) to see what they had. each time a different parts store had the best looking unit. i believe i bought a new one once and remans the other times. i haven't put a lot of miles on them, but they have lasted reasonable times and no vibrations etc ... so far so good.
i remember one of the places i went once the axle was obviously wrong and they double-checked the p/ns. the brake tone ring was wrong; maybe something else too.
i have a hard time justifying other more expensive options, but if i wind up having to change one too soon then i'll probably be changing my tune too
