Cost of replacement 5 speed manual transmission

Can someone give me an idea of what a new 5 speed manual tranny replacement cost is for 2004 XT? If done at dealer are they new or rebuilt? If done at independent shop - they rebuild? Is there usually a core charge, or they keep your old one? What does a just a typical clutch job cost?

I'm not sure off the top of my head, but I know this topic has been discussed before. I would highly recommend using the forum search feature, you might turn up some very useful information. good luck in your hunt!

A brand new complete transmission is about $3600.00 plus installation. Most dealers can rebuild the unit currently in the car for less, what is wrong with yours?

clutches usually go for 300-400 for the install plus parts depending on the shop.

I have a whine from the tranny area, I thought it could be the diff, dealer says nope, its the tranny. Dunno, but I'm stuck with my car apart at thier shop, and I need it back... They want $4800.00 for new installed Subaru unit with clutch. 1 yr warranty . Just to make sure; a new trans comes with the diff attached, right??

BTW, I also asked for the old trans back since I was getting a new unit - they said they keep it for a core, or they charge $1000.00 for the core. So, if I go to the parts dept and buy a trans myself is it about 3600.00 plus 1000.00 if I did not have a core?

I would want a second opinion from an independent shop before I dumped that much money into my car.

However, I have never had a good experience with a Subaru dealership and SOA (Subaru of America) has never backed me up.

I'm pretty sure the dealer HAS to offer a rebuild... That's what Subaru trains them for...

MSRP on a trans if you walked into the parts department is like $3649 or something like that.

A rebuild would be ~$1500 or so.

I'd take the car back from the dealer and get a second opinion.

A new trans from Subaru (subarugenuineparts.com) has an MSRP of $3601 with NO core charge, but online it sells for $3383. You can get a used trans for much less, $1250 on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market in NJ with 30k miles. Don't let them take you for that much money, and please tell us which dealer this is.

I miss my turbo, and my 6-speeds of fun.

Funny, the whine in my car comes from the passenger seat: "Do you really have to go around this turn so fast!???"
